ESTNN highlights some players to watch for in 2021.
The year 2020 is coming to a close, and it was a successful one for competitive Fortnite. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, Epic Games hosted several massive tournaments, featuring million-dollar prize pools. The entire competitive scene took advantage of their opportunities. Some household names continued adding to their already impressive tournament history, whereas new stars began to rise at an astounding rate. Although there won’t be a Fortnite World Cup in 2021, the developers and players will continue improving the competitive product. With 2020 in the rearview, let’s look at some players and storylines to keep an eye on in 2021.
Benjyfishy (EU)
Five-time Fortnite Champion Series finalist benjyfishy is undoubtedly one of the world’s best players. He’s won multiple Cash Cup tournaments, and his career has all the makings of a Hall of Fame-type player. Despite coming close so many times, Benjy’s track record still lacks a major tournament victory. Thus far, his best opportunities were in Season X and Chapter 2 – Season 1, but he managed to fall short both times. 2021 will be a massive year for Benjy as he continues his quest for an FNCS title.
Whofishy (NAE)
Controller player Whofishy emerged in 2020 as a top contender who produced consistent tournament results. He began the year on console, where he took second place alongside duo partner Sticks in FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 2. Whofishy then moved back over to PC, where he secured a tenth place finish in the FNCS Invitational and seventh in FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 3. This controller player’s solo placements are exceptional, and he always seems to be in a position to win. Keep an eye on Whofishy in the new year.
Vadeal (EU)
Vadeal arrived on the competitive Fortnite scene early in 2020, where he quickly compiled some impressive achievements. He steadily improved from week to week; with multiple remarkable Cash Cup placements and three consecutive Fortnite Champion Series Grand Final appearances. Vadeal managed a 34th place finish in the FNCS Invitational and followed that up with a 13th place finish in FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 3. The German player rounded out the year with a 28th place finish in FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 4 and a DreamHack Open victory alongside fellow young gun Noahreyli. Expect some significant accomplishments from Vadeal in 2021.
Rezon (EU)
Like Vadeal, Rezon also made a massive impact on the European scene in 2020. Rezon won a Solo Cash Cup tournament right out of the gate before putting together one of the best individual performances across any competitive Fortnite region. The young German player qualified for all four Fortnite Champion Series Finals, managing 10th in Chapter 2 – Season 2, 14th in the FNCS Invitational and 7th in Chapter 2 – Season 3. Rezon and trio teammates Noahreyli and aqua were in a position to win FNCS Chapter 2 potentially – Season 4, but aqua received a ban for inappropriate conduct in the tournament’s later stages. Nevertheless, there is a lot of success on the horizon for Rezon.
Noahreyli (EU)
Noahreyli is the third of three players — including Rezon and Vadeal — who elevated his name in this year’s online-only competitive Fortnite scene. The Swiss player started 2020 slow; failing to qualify for the FNCS Chapter 2 – Season 2 Finals and taking 83rd place in the FNCS Invitational. However, Noahreyli then began appearing atop Cash Cup leaderboards consistently and claimed four trio tournament victories. Noahreyli and Vadeal secured first and eighth place in the last two DreamHack Online Open tournaments to cap off the year. Noahrely sits firmly atop the list of young talented players heading into next year.
Khanada (NAE)
After mutually parting ways with Team SoloMid, Khanada instantly became the hottest commodity on Fortnite’s free-agent market. He finished the year as arguably NA East’s best player, considering his four consecutive FNCS Final appearances. His placements in those competitions included 4th in the FNCS Invitational and 10th in Chapter 2 – Season 4. With Twitch upholding his account ban, Khanada is searching for a new organization to call home and will take his talents to YouTube for the foreseeable future. It’ll be an interesting upcoming year for Khanada as he continues his quest for a significant Fortnite tournament win.
Illest (NAE)
Before 2020, not many people knew the name illest. And even less could have predicted what the impressive NA East player would accomplish. Illest improved significantly from the beginning of 2020 until the very end. He reached the finals of three Fortnite Champion Series competitions; managing finishes of 27th in the FNCS Invitational, 8th in Chapter 2 – Season 3 and 14th in Chapter 2 – Season 4. Illest also won a whopping four Solo Cash Cup tournaments. 2021 might be the year we see illest win an FNCS or even a DreamHack event, given his ability to adapt each season.
Reet (NAW)
NA West controller player Reet established himself as one of the best on the sticks in 2020 without question. He threw himself into the most insane lineup of players in history at DreamHack Anaheim; which was his first offline event. After finishing in 50th place, Reet proceeded to capture ten Cash Cup victories and three top-ten FNCS results. Players began to analyze Reet’s playstyle out of necessity, because he elevated the game like almost no one before him. Unfortunately, Reet competes out of the underappreciated NA West region but could easily compete at the highest level in any region. There’s no telling what Reet is capable of in 2021.
