Garena unveiled the Free Fire India Championship, with Paytm First Games as an official sponsor. The tournament is for Indian players only and features a prize pool of INR 500K ($67K USD). This is the single largest Free Fire tournament to be hosted in India.
The tournament was initially announced in January, with a prize pool of INR 350K ($47K USD) and the entire league stage was played out in the following months. However, Garena’s plans to conduct a LAN finals were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown in the country. While initially it was announced that the finals would be held at a later date, Garena revealed that they had canceled the tournament and the finals, and would be reintroducing the entire tournament. Another factor contributing to this decision could also be the fact that the Indian Free Fire competitive scene has had troubles with cheaters in recent months, leading to several notable players getting banned.
This will be the second time that PFG has been involved with a Free Fire tournament, with the platform hosting a Free Fire Solos tournament in April of this year. The platform has also worked with Riot Games across titles such as Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics, as well as with Supercell for Clash Royale.
