Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Garner has joined OverActive Media’s ownership group. As a new member of the ownership group Marner will become an “integral part” of team-brand building and esports promotion for the company.
“We are building a leading 21st-century sports media and entertainment company that speaks to a new generation of fans. An authentic and compelling business model that rests at the intersection of sport, media/entertainment and esports is core to our strategy at OverActive Media,” OverActive Media CEO Chris Overholt told The Esports Observer. “This generation of fans think differently about how they connect to their heroes and the influencers they love. Our sustained success will rest in our ability to deliver innovative marketing and partnership collaborations like Mitch represents.”
Marner is an avid gamer that already had an established relationship with the players, having streamed with them in the past. His vision is to help introduce sports fans to esports.
“Over the past few months, I’ve live-streamed with several Toronto Ultra players and built some great friendships with the team at OverActive,” Marner, who is currently in the NHL bubble, said in a release. “As a gamer, my investment is an opportunity to join one of the best global esports organizations and to help bridge the gap between hockey fans and esports. I’m looking forward to working with the players and the front office to introduce the Toronto Ultra and Toronto Defiant to a young audience of traditional sport fans.”
OAM is the parent company of the Toronto Defiant (Overwatch League), Toronto Ultra (Call of Duty League), and the Madrid-based MAD Lions franchise in the League of Legends European Championship (LEC), as well as a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive squad.
OAM’s Media’s ownership group is led by the Kimel Family and a group led by Sheldon Pollack and Canadian communications company Bell.
