Riot Games has officially announced the location and format for the Mid Season Invitational that will be held in-person.
After days of leaks and speculation, Riot Games has officially announced the location and format of the Mid Season Invitational. After forgoing the tournament last year because of the pandemic, League of Legends esports has revealed what fans should expect for the LAN event this year.
MSI to Iceland
The second-most prestigious tournament in League of Legends will be gracing the shores of Reykjavik, Iceland in 2021. This will mark the first time that the tournament has been held in the country.
The island country has been chosen because of its lack of risk during the on-going pandemic and the government’s willingness to work with Riot Games according to Naz Aletaha, Head of Global Esports Partnerships & Business Development.
New Format, No Play-ins
With the new host country also comes a new tournament format that will disregard the old play-in system. The qualification process will be the same, the top team from each region qualifies. Now, instead of minor regional teams fighting it out to have a spot in the event, all 12 teams will start at the main event.
There will be three stages to this new format. The event will start off with a group stage double round-robin stage that will have the top two teams in each group advance to the second stage. The next stage will be a second double round-robin with the remaining teams and only the top four teams from that group will make it to the third and final stage.
The final part of the tournament will be a best-of-three playoff bracket to decide the ultimate winner of MSI 2021.
