AI-based esports video-highlight platform Sizzle.gg has announced the closure of a $5m (~£4.10m) investment round led by White Star Capital.

The seed funding round also saw contributions from investors such as Progression Fund, Eterna Capital, Play Ventures, Mindset Ventures and Xoogler Ventures.

Sizzle specialises in automatically creating short highlight videos from esports competitions, teams and streamers. The investment news occurs as Sizzle leaves its beta phase, becoming available globally with plans to maintain ‘rapid expansion’.

In the official press release, Vijay Koduri, co-founder and CEO of Sizzle.gg, commented: “With this recent round of funding, we’ll be able to expand further and offer even more to creators and leagues, helping them continue to grow and reach their audiences in new and unique ways.”

Sizzle relies on AI technology to analyse videos, cutting highlights into 15 to 30-second videos based on different criteria. Some of the criteria mentioned include detecting funny moments, endings and onscreen action. As of right now, PUBG Esports Americas utilises the platform, which is free for streamers and content creators.

Eddie Lee, Partner at White Star Capital, added: “What Sizzle.gg is doing is groundbreaking and we are thrilled to be lead investors in something so innovative.

“Whether it’s streamers, teams or Tier 1 esports leagues like PUBG Esports, their content needs are only going to grow exponentially, so we’re excited to be involved in a platform that revolutionises content generation.”

Esports Insider says: Content creation is instrumental in the esports industry. Sizzle.gg’s objective of providing a tool to enhance and speed up production makes it a very attractive asset in this market. Depending on how creators embrace Sizzle.gg, $5m may look cheap in a near future.
