Riot Games confirmed Friday just minutes before the start of the week 8 matches that the LEC will go on indefinite break over growing coronavirus concerns.
“In light of the uncertainty during the rapidly changing COVID-10 pandemic situation and in an abundance of caution, we’ve decided to err on the side of player and staff safety and suspend the LEC Spring Season until further notice,” Riot wrote.
Riot added that while no member of LEC staff or players has tested positive for the virus, they “have reason to suspect an LEC stasff member may have been exposed to the virus,” and that that person is under quarantine and looked at by doctors.
The LEC is the third League of Legends circuit to get suspended over COVID-19 concerns. The LPL was the first one, which only returned with online matches this Monday. The second was the LCK, which is still on indefinite hiatus. The LCS is still ongoing, but recent updates from Riot stated, that the league will go ahead without live audience.
LEC’s hiatus, shouldn’t cause too much trouble to an already rescheduled esports calendar. The MSI 2020 was recently moved to July, three months from now, and the LEC only has two weeks of play plus playoffs remaining. LCK, on the other hand, still needs to finish the second half of its Spring Split.
