Tweek wins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at GOML Online 2020 – Daily Esports

Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at GOML Online 2020 on July 26. In doing so, Tweek defended his title as the reigning GOML champion. It was also his second online tournament victory since the beginning of quarantine, following Collision Online in May.

Already known for his wide array of characters, Tweek added another character to his repertoire at this event: Diddy Kong. He used the fairly uncommon character throughout most of his Smash Ultimate sets at GOML Online 2020. In top 256, Tweek defeated James “Caius” D., Jireh “JayRay” Agda, and Dylan “Slime” Coupland.

Tweek reached top 8 after earning a pair of 3-0 wins against Keegan “KEE” Lude and Eric “ESAM” Lew. Tweek dropped his first game of the tournament to Ricardo “Sinji” Mathison, in a set where he actually played Wolf. Nevertheless, he beat Sinji 3-1 and advanced into Winners Finals.

Bringing back his Diddy Kong, Tweek beat Kolawole “Kola” Aideyan 3-1. Then in Grand Finals, he overcame Spencer “BestNess” Garner with a commanding 3-0. As a result, Tweek won GOML Online 2020 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles without ever going to game five.

Other results from GOML Online Smash Ultimate Singles

BestNess came into the GOML Online 2020 Smash Ultimate event as the No. 1 seed. However, he suffered a fairly early loss to Luis “Lui$” Oceguera in Winners Quarters. Despite this setback, he made a nice run through losers to finish in 2nd place. On the way to top 4, BestNess eliminated Carrington “Wrath” Osborne, Colin “colinies” Landals, and Sinji. He then won his runback against Lui$ and defeated Kola before falling to Tweek.

Lui$’s path to 4th place included a huge upset and a handful of other impressive wins. He advanced into top 16 by defeating Raffi “Raffi-X” Azar and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby (who played Pit throughout the tournament). Lui$ then scored his big win on BestNess to reach winners side of top 8. He also eliminated Noah “Sharp” M. before his run finally came to a close.

Sharp had an impressive showing himself, finishing in 5th place in GOML Online 2020 Smash Ultimate Singles. He took a set off of Robert “Myran” Herrin before colinies sent him to the losers bracket. From there, Sharp beat Mason “Loch” Eckert, Chris “Lights” B., Brett “8BitMan” Esposito, and ESAM.
