Pokemon Go Origin Forme Giratina Guide: Weaknesses, Best Counters, Raid Hours, And More

A variety of Legendary Pokemon have been returning to Pokemon Go over the past few weeks, and one more is back again for a limited time. Origin Forme Giratina, the cover monster from Pokemon Platinum, is making an encore appearance in five-star Raids until October 23. If you’re looking to add the Legendary to your collection (or just want to use this chance to stock up on more Giratina Candy), we’ve rounded up some tips that’ll help you beat and catch Giratina below.

Giratina Raid Hours

Origin Forme Giratina began appearing in five-star Raids on October 9 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET (immediately following Moltres’ departure from the game), and it’ll remain available until the same time on October 23. These Raids can occur any time, but you’ll receive an in-game notification when one is about to begin at a nearby Gym, so you shouldn’t have too much difficulty tracking a Giratina Raid down.

If you’re eager to catch Origin Forme Giratina, your best chance to capture one will come during Niantic’s weekly Raid Hour events. These occur every Wednesday evening from 6-7 PM local time. Giratina will be featured during two Raid Hours before it leaves the game again, on October 14 and October 21.

Giratina Weaknesses And Counters

Giratina is unique among Legendary Pokemon thanks to its typing, Ghost/Dragon. Ironically, each of these types is weak against itself, making Giratina vulnerable to other Ghost and Dragon Pokemon. Any strong monsters like Golurk, Chandelure, Rayquaza, Salamence, and Dragonite will dish out lots of damage to Giratina, but keep in mind that they’ll take super-effective damage in return, so they may not last as long in battle against it as some other counters.

Fortunately, Giratina’s typing gives it a few other weaknesses as well, namely to Dark, Ice, and Fairy Pokemon. Darkrai will be especially helpful, as it’s very powerful and resists Giratina’s Ghost-type moves, but other Pokemon like Weavile, Tyranitar, Mamoswine, Gardevoir, and Granbull will also come in handy when battling the Legendary.

Types To Avoid

As previously mentioned, Ghost and Dragon Pokemon are each weak against their own types, so while they’ll deal super-effective damage to Giratina, they’ll take it in return from the Legendary. Ghost Pokemon also have an advantage over Psychic types, so avoid bringing along any of those when challenging Giratina.
