1-2-Switch is rumoured to be getting a sequel – for some reason

Nintendo Switch launch game 1-2-Switch is apparently getting a sequel, despite its middling reviews.

Nintendo already has a number of upcoming sequels that fans are itching to get their hands on, namely The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, Bayonetta 3, and Metroid Prime 4.

A new rumour has added one more sequel to that list, but rather than something like Super Mario Odyssey 2 or Fire Emblem: Four Houses, it’s a follow-up to 1-2-Switch.

This comes from leaker Zippo, who previously claimed (among others) that a new Donkey Kong game is also in development. Although they’re not particularly buzzed about the idea of 1-2-Switch receiving a sequel.

‘You know, sometimes I really, really don’t understand Nintendo, as a company, or as a developer. This is one of those times,’ they wrote. ‘1-2 Switch is one of the most dull, lifeless, forgettable games I have ever played, and yet, it’s getting a sequel for some reason. It sold well, I think?

‘Usually when I do a scoop, it’s usually a game I’m interested in. This is not one of those games.’

Their confusion isn’t unwarranted. 1-2-Switch was a simple mini-game collection that launched alongside the Nintendo Switch and was basically the console’s equivalent to Wii Sports: an excuse to demonstrate the capabilities of the Joy-Con controller.

Unlike Wii Sports, it didn’t particularly resonate with audiences or critics, only managing a middling Metacritic score of 58. It’s sales weren’t quite as bad, at 3.18 million units, but neither were they particularly impressive, especially if you consider a sequel wouldn’t have the benefit of being a launch title.

This could also match up with a statement another insider made only last month. Emily Rogers, who has regularly shared Nintendo information in the past, mentioned on Twitter that 2022 could be the Switch’s strongest year so far, adding that she’s curious to see the critical reception to an upcoming ‘casual game’ that’s also a sequel.

‘I’m curious to see the critical reception to an upcoming casual game. I doubt this sequel will win over many new fans,’ she wrote.

Nintendo has yet to have its first Nintendo Direct of the year, which usually takes place around January or February time. Although there’s no guarantee one will happen this month.
