When Nintendo announced that Advance Wars was making an unexpected comeback with Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp, fans of the cult classic tactical RPG were excited. Of course, that feeling of elation was hurt a bit when this remake was delayed from its original December 2021 launch window without a new release date to replace it.
Thankfully, those of us who have been eagerly awaiting this tactical blast from the past can now rest easy. During today's Nintendo Direct, we not only found out that Advance War 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is coming this April, but we also got some additional details about the new content that was added to this remake.
The newly announced release date will be April 8, 2022, which means we only have a few months before we can re-experience this GBA classic. It will include both Advance Wars titles, and it looks like they've given a brand-new coat of paint to make them look great on the Nintendo Switch.
Graphical updates and new animations would have been good enough, but today's trailer also showed off some of the new features that this package contains. Each of the commanding officers is now voiced, which should add more personality to the colorful cast of characters. In terms of gameplay changes, you can fast-forward the action and reset your turns if you happen to make any tactical errors.
There are also new modes such as the War Room, which seems to be some kind of battle mode where you aim to set and beat high scores. You can create your own maps that you can share with friends. It also looks like online functionality has been added in that will allow you to battle other players.
Considering that we're getting this and Triangle Strategy relatively soon, it seems like the Nintendo Switch is experiencing a bit of a tactical RPG renaissance. There's no telling if further adventures set in the Advance Wars universe could be on the horizon, but hopefully, if this remake sells well enough we'll get more games filled with adorable, cartoony military skirmishes.
