The console market seems very much like a closed club. You would think even the biggest companies in the world would be brave, if not a little bit silly to go up against the likes of PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo when even the least newest of those companies has more than 20 years of experience. Then again, there was a time when Microsoft's Xbox was that newcomer, and it has done alright for itself.
Now there are reports Apple is considering a foray into the console market. Windows Central's Jez Corden spoke of Apple's possible intentions during a recent episode of the Xbox Two podcast. “I've heard that for ages, that Apple was exploring making a video game console,” Corden said. “I don't know if it's going to be a VR play or a metaverse thing or something like that, but some of the engineers that Apple's poached from Microsoft were because they wanted to explore making their own console.”
It should be noted that Corden also highlighted on the podcast that he hasn't seen any concrete evidence Apple is creating a console just yet. These reports are things that he has heard from people who would be in the know, but he hasn't seen any documentation to back it up.
Big companies, and particularly Apple, work on projects, sometimes ones as big as a debut console all the time only to decide down the line that it isn't working or it isn't worth it. That Apple has recruited people from Xbox would certainly suggest it is expanding its games division. A logical, albeit very big step in that process would be to create a console that might rival the established systems already on the market.
Apple's contributions to the gaming industry have been relatively small so far, at least in comparison to creating its own console. It does have Apple Arcade, a subscription service that gives you access to a wide library of games, some of which are exclusives. You can actually play Apple Arcade through Apple TV, so it's sort of a console already, but not really.
