Armored Core 6 Won’t Have Soulsborne Gameplay, Will Have Bigger Single-Player Focus

Armored Core has been around since 1997 when it debuted on the PlayStation. It's a long-running series for FromSoftware, pre-dating the Japanese developer's fame, which it gained with the Souls series. But it's been a decade since the last Armored Core entry.

This is where fans and newcomers alike were intrigued when FromSoft showed off a trailer for Armored Core during The Game Awards last week. Like previous entries, it'll be a third-person action game with a focus on mech customisation, which includes weapons, limb types, and generators that confer different powers and abilities. Speaking to IGN, FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki and Masuru Yamamura elaborated on the upcoming game.

Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon, to give its full title, will see players battle on a remote planet called Rubicon 3 over a mystery substance coveted by various corporations. Miyazaki will be taking a more background role over the project while experienced Dark Souls developer Masaru Yamamura, who was lead designer on Sekiro, will be overseeing the game.

Since FromSoftware has grown since the success it has enjoyed with the Soulsborne titles, and especially from Elden Ring, Miyazaki rues how the resources the developer now has wasn't available for the likes of Armored Core 4 on PS3, he told IGN. However, the new game won't be taking cues from the genre the developer has made famous. "We've not been making a conscious effort to try to direct it towards a more Soulsborne type gameplay," he said, and instead pointed how he wanted to return to the series' core concept of mecha assembly and customisation.

In contrast to Armored Core 5, which gambled on large-scale multiplayer, the new entry will have a stronger single-player focus, with a mission-based structure. However, the sixth entry will have a multiplayer: "Yes, we do plan to have a versus mode, similar to previous Armored Core titles where you'll be able to customise your mech and take that fully customised mech into battle with others," Yamamura said. However, the developer wants to save finer details on this mode for a late date.

There are more many more details in the IGN interview, which went quite in depth, but players can start to get a little more excited about the aggressive and action-orientated fighting the new game promises.
