Battlefield 2042 gets free weekend and sale but only on PC

In an attempt to attract old and new players, Battlefield 2042 is temporarily free to play and on sale throughout the weekend.

In the month since its launch, Battlefield 2042 has struggled to please its player base. It’s not without its positives, but it was still riddled with bugs and other technical issues, and many players took umbrage with the absence of certain features.

Even now, the game’s player reception on Steam is overwhelmingly negative and EA and DICE are no doubt eager to improve Battlefield 2042’s standing. For now, the answer seems to be letting everyone play it for free this weekend.

Not only that, all three editions of Battlefield 2042 are discounted until December 22. So, the standard edition is £32.99 instead of £42.99, the Gold Edition is £61.59 instead of £79.99, and the Deluxe Edition is £80.99 instead of £99.99.

Obviously, the intent is for new players to try it for free and enjoy it enough to want to buy it, with the reduced price making it more enticing. Although, curiously, the free weekend and discounts seem to only be applicable to the Steam release.

At the time of writing, neither Battlefield 2042’s listings on the PlayStation and Xbox stores mention anything about a free weekend. It doesn’t appear to be a thing on EA’s own storefront either. The PlayStation and Xbox stores do offer discounts, but they’re completely different and not as generous as that offered by Steam.

The Epic Games Store does have the same discounts for Battlefield 2042 as Steam does, but it looks like the free weekend is completely exclusive to Steam for some reason.

Earlier this month, insider Tom Henderson claimed that Battlefield 2042 is the second fastest selling entry in the series, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s profitable and Steam Charts shows that player retention has dropped significantly over the last month.

Despite the struggles, EA seems committed to its ambitious plans for a wider and interconnected Battlefield universe, with Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella now in charge of the franchise.

Battlefield 2042 is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
