There are three creatures one could consider the official mascots of the Final Fantasy series: chocobos, moogles, and of course, cactuars. After getting introduced to the blockbuster RPG series in Final Fantasy 6, cactuars have become one of the most iconic video game characters in history.

Therefore, it makes sense for Cactuar to own up to its reputation and rev up its engines in Chocobo GP. After all, the prolific prickly personified plant was a secret character in the original Chocobo Racing. In turn, Cactuar is a secret character in Chocobo GP as well. However, it will take more than a single Story mode playthrough to unlock them.

How To Unlock The Extra Difficulty In Story Mode

Before you can unlock Cactuar, you need to unlock the Extra Story Mode first. But, how do you do this? All that's required is the completion of the Normal Story Mode first. Then, after finishing the Epilogue, you'll receive a message indicating multiple rewards, including the new Extra Difficulty.

Luckily, you can unlock Extra Difficulty while playing in Beginner or Master class. So you can sigh a breath of relief and take it easy on yourself and your vehicle.

So, what is Extra Difficulty anyway? Think of Extra Difficulty as the New Game Plus of Story Mode. The plot and races are all the same. However, you can now play with any character you wish without the constraints of the story's progression holding you back. Furthermore, Extra difficulty has more formidable challenges to overcome. Primarily, instead of placing ahead of a rival, the victory conditions get raised to placing first in a race.

How To Unlock Cactuar

After you've unlocked Extra Difficulty, unlocking Cactuar is relatively straightforward. All you need to do is complete Story Mode in this difficulty. Again, this accomplishment is regardless of racing class. Furthermore, clearing all additional missions is not required to unlock Cactuar.

Once you finish the Epilogue, you'll receive an all too familiar message window informing you that you can now play as Cactuar.

Tips For Clearing Extra Story Mode

Still, clearing Extra Story Mode can get frustrating. After all, the bar for chapter completion is significantly higher. So, what can you do to nab those first-place spots and continue the story?

To ease the difficulty curve of your second playthrough, we recommend using the game's shop. You'll likely have plenty of tickets available to spend after your first story mode playthrough. But, if you are running short, we suggest playing through the various Series Races. Completing a series in first-place also rewards tickets. Two other ways to earn rewards are beating target ghosts in Time Attack mode and playing the Chocobo Grand Prix.

Once you've farmed enough tickets, use them to purchase the additional ride models for your characters. Every character has three models of their ride: standard, grip, and speed. Completing the story mode on Normal difficulty unlocks all the grip models in the shop. Furthermore, you'll unlock the speed models in the shop as you progress through Extra difficulty.

The additional ride models can prove very helpful when adjusting to particular tracks and opponents. For instance, Asura's Tsunami Ability combined with her speed model, Leviathan Triple-Engine, makes her a speedy and formidable racer.

Furthermore, if you have not unlocked the entire roster from the shop yet, try spending your tickets on new characters as well. You may find a racer that better compliments your playstyle than the racer you've been primarily playing.

What Else Gets Unlocked After Getting Cactuar?

Completing Extra Story mode offers other fabulous Cactuar-centric goodies besides the character. First, Cactuar's grip and speed models will become available in the store. Additionally, you'll also unlock the music track, Breakneck Cactuar! You can change the racing BGM after buying this new track through the options menu.
