It's safe to say that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a smash hit for CD Projekt Red and Netflix. Not only did it attract millions of viewers but it also gave the then maligned Cyberpunk 2077 a much-needed boost in sales and popularity. Despite all of that though, it seems like CD Projekt Red isn't that interested in revisiting Edgerunners in the future and has revealed that there are no plans for a second season of the show.
Speaking with Famitsu (thanks VGC), CD Projekt Red‘s Japan country manager Satoru Honma was asked whether the positive reception to Edgrunners meant that a second season could possibly be in the works. Unfortunately, Honma has pretty much ruled out a second season, claiming that Edgerunners was planned as a "standalone work."
"I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback," said Honma. "However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’. Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different."
While it sounds like there's a slim chance that CD Projekt Red could work on more anime titles in the future, it sounds like a second season for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners wouldn't be very high on its list of priorities. Seeing as though Edgerunners is a "standalone work" its possible that it was meant to compliment the game rather than give it a shot in the arm a year later, and that could be why a second season was never actually planned.
Still, it's not like we don't have Cyberpunk-related projects to be looking forward to, as CD Projekt Red recently revealed its working on a full-blown sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. We don't know when the game will release or what it's even called at the moment, but it's nice to know that the developer isn't abandoning the world of Cyberpunk 2077 entirely.
