Pearl Abyss has released a trailer for its open-world adventure game DokeV and confirmed that it isn’t an MMO anymore.

Out of all the new trailers shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live, the one for DokeV was one of the most interesting. However, despite appearing with a three-minute-long gameplay trailer, it wasn’t entirely clear what it actually was.

Judging by the trailer alone, it seemed to be a mix between Pokémon and Monster Hunter (and not in a Monster Hunter Stories way), with the action gameplay making it lean more towards the latter.

Since then, it’s been clarified that DokeV is an open world action adventure game populated with Dokebi, magical creatures that gain strength from peoples’ dreams.

It isn’t clear yet how you obtain Dokebi but, rather than engage in turn-based battles, it looks like they aid you in real-time battles. It’s like if in Pokémon the human trainer also took part in fights with a giant hammer or something.

The player character (with their creepy child eyes) can be seen using all manner of tools and vehicles for exploration and navigating their home city, as well as different weapons to fight enemies with.

They also perform team-up attacks with some of the Dokebi, like a panda with boxing gloves and a pink tapir looking thing that’s almost reminiscent of Bing Bong from Pixar’s Inside Out.

The game is being developed by South Korean studio Pearl Abyss, which previously made the massively multiplayer online game Black Desert Online. In fact, DokeV was originally an MMO as well but Pearl Abyss states via the game’s Twitter account that this is no longer the case.

#DokeV was initially introduced as an MMO, but we decided to move the game in a different direction and it’s now a creature-collecting open world action-adventure.

But regardless of genre, we’re going for fun, vibrant, and adventurous! 🦙☂️

Pearl Abyss is also working on Crimson Desert, a single-player action role-playing game set in the same universe as Black Desert. It’s supposed to be releasing this winter.

As for DokeV, it seems to lack both a release window and release platforms. Although considering the visuals and how intense they can get during battles, it’s safe to assume that this will come to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 at the very least.

DokeV is currently in development.
