Doom Mod Replaces Space Marine With Hank Hill

Hank Hill and the unnamed space marine who repels the forces of Hell in Doom have a lot in common. One sells propane and propane accessories, and the other uses fiery implements to extinguish the lives of countless demons. Frankly, it’s hard to tell the two apart, which makes one wonder why it took so long for someone to come up with a mod that smashed these two beloved franchises into one.

The King of the Hill Doom Mod comes courtesy of creator FreewayHere (via PC Gamer), who said they first started replacing DoomGuy’s sprites with Hank Hill’s face "out of boredom." Although not initially intended for a mod, FreewayHere posted the sprites to the r/PixelArt where he received "considerable interest in the idea" of a full mod.

"I suddenly felt responsible," wrote FreewayHere in the mod's description, "and so I began working on an actual mod."

That work has been going on for the past few months leading to the debut release of the King of the Hill Doom Mod on ModDB. The mod replaces both the player's sprite and the animated HUD faces with Hank Hill's stately visage and also swaps out several in-game objects for those more appropriate to Hank's character. Those include the explosive barrels swapped for propane canisters, health pickups with cans of Alamo beer, and a hazard suit replaced by Dale's exterminator outfit. The shotgun also includes a riding mower lifted from Lawn of the Dead, and the BFG9000 is naturally a propane-burning BBQ.

Doom's iconic E1M1 also includes Smoking "Sammy" Salmon, the Singing Manitoba Fish, and the opening menu has King of the Hill's theme song, Travelin' Man by Ricky Nelson. There are even custom maps on the way, although they're still definitely works-in-progress.

You can download the latest version of the King of the Hill mod release on September 29 by heading on down to ModDB.com. For UK residents looking to work out their frustrations on an older generation for which they can blame for all their current problems, there's also this mod that lets you blast an even more demonic version of Margaret Thatcher.
