The developer behind Dune: Spice Wars, Shiro, recently released a multiplayer mode with support for up to four players. The update is part of a development roadmap stretching far into the future. Dune: Spice Wars launched into Early Access on April 26, 2022. The final version of the game currently has no scheduled release date.
Dune: Spice Wars is described as “a 4X real-time strategy game from the developers of the critically acclaimed Northgard. Set in Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking Dune universe, you must lead your faction and battle for control and dominance over the harsh desert planet of Arrakis.”
The latest update allows players to either ”band together in 2 v. 2 matches or face each other in a free-for-all of up to four players. Take the reins of either the Atreides, Harkonnen, Fremen, or Smugglers. Any open spots can be filled with AI-controlled factions ranging in difficulty from easy to insane and each game can be tailored to suit your preferences including map size and sandworm, storm, and Sietch activity. Victory conditions are also up to you!”
In addition to adding a multiplayer mode, Shiro also “reworked every development tree with a focus on synergy between factions and added new political resolutions, events, regions, and a whole load of other improvements.”
This represents the first major update for Dune: Spice Wars. Shiro previously released a development roadmap which promises plenty more to come over the course of the coming months including a new faction as well as the addition of spaceports, ships, and other advanced units. The mysterious councilors that can take the form of special agents or fighting units with unique abilities are also on the horizon. The game will be getting more victory conditions at some point in the future as well.
When it comes to the source material, Shiro has apparently gone to great lengths to get things right. Dune: Spice Wars has been very well received by fans of the franchise on this particular point. “We've taken great efforts to make Dune: Spice Wars true to Frank Herbert's source material, to deliver an experience that delivers the same sense of grand machinations, subtle political plotting, and great reversals.” The developer adds that “with multiplayer, the potential for these slow boils and epic moments skyrockets as players vie for the upper hand on each stage of war.”
