Dying Light 2 Is Going To Be Twice As Big On Xbox Than On PS5

Dying Light 2: Stay Human definitely stirred up feelings when Techland proudly announced that players would need around 500 hours to fully see the game. Cue much discourse about the ever-growing length of games (we're looking at you Assassin's Creed) and a plethora of op-eds about how time is a wasting when it comes to games. Naturally, TheGamer stayed clear of such rumination…oh…wait…we didn't. But anyhow the Dying Light 2 team eventually cleared things up with a clarification that the game's main story will only take roughly 20 hours, while adding in all the side quests will take players up to 80 hours.

Aside from the length of the game, another detail about Dying Light 2 has been revealed. And that is the file size. It seems Dying Light 2, soothingly, won't be taking up too much space in the precious SSDs of players on PS5. But on Xbox it's looking like a different story.

According to a recent leak, the official file size for Dying Light 2 on the PS5 will be 32.5 GB, which isn't too big considering the open-world nature of Dying Light and the upgraded visuals for its sequel. PC players meanwhile can expect a file size of 60 GB. But over on Xbox, Dying Light 2 will take up 72 GB, which is more than twice as big as the PS5 version.

This gulf between file sizes on Xbox and PlayStation consoles is pretty dramatic and not the best of news for Xbox owners considering the premium that SSDs can command for the Microsoft console. Now it could be the case of uncompressed cut-scenes on one platform but not the other, or just assets not being compiled in the initial download, meaning later updates could reduce the overall file size. But this is just conjecture.

The PS5 version of Dying Light 2 could be making use of tools that Sony has created for developers, which allow them to reduce the amount of storage space their games take up. Some players have noticed, for example, that PS5 versions of games can actually take up less space than their PS4 equivalents. Mark Cerny, who was the lead system architect on the PS5, actually acknowledged this in a Wired interview a couple of months ago.

Cerny explained that the PS5 uses Integrated IO and a technique known as Invisible Compression, which basically means developers are able to use Sony's publishing tools to handle the decompression process. The result is that file sizes can be shrunk on the PS5. The Sony console doesn't ship with the biggest of SSDs to begin with, and the amount of usable space is another factor, so this decompression is a handy tool. Meanwhile, Microsoft has a long background in computers and software so you'd expect the Xbox to perform a little better in this regard.

Whatever the case, players will want to prepare their storage as Dying Light 2 is set to launch February 4 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One. You can read more Techland's sequel in our preview for the game.
