With no sign of any new trailer, a gameplay leak for Elden Ring is the only new footage fans have for From Software’s highly anticipated new title.
Considering it’s one of the most eagerly awaited games of next year, the successor to the Dark Souls franchise and a project that’s been in production since 2017, it’s amazing how little has been seen of Elden Ring so far.
You got a reveal teaser in 2019, a gameplay reveal in June and… that’s it. Nothing more has ever been seen or said about the game and the few leaks there’ve been have proven extremely minor. Just like this latest one.
The leak is just 27 seconds long and despite being advertised as ‘gameplay footage’ involves nothing more than a player character awkwardly stumbling around on some rocks. But somehow it still looks great.
Why whoever leaked it chose this to take a video clip of (using what appears to be a potato camera in low-res mode) is a mystery but it’s actually more exciting than it first seems.
Apart from the large castle in the background you do get a sense of how large and detailed the open world environment is, kind of like a much grimmer version of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.
Where exactly the clip has come from is unclear but it’s far too early to be review code and while it could be a preview it’s unlikely anyone trusted with such a thing would want to risk ruining their reputation over this.
It is most likely to be a Western source though, so perhaps someone at Microsoft or Sony that was helping with development. Xbox boss Phil Spencer talked about having played ‘quite a bit’ of the game last November, so it could be a similar situation to that.
A recent update on the game’s progress suggested that it was nearly finished, implying that the January release date is still the one to watch.
Elden Ring is due to launch on January 21 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
