Sony has a lot of big PS5 releases in the works but has only shared detailed information about a handful of them.
Unlike Microsoft, which at least attempted an E3 style showcase of new game announcements and reveals, Sony’s only announcements in June were a third party and VR centric State of Play event.
It didn’t mention anything about normal first party games, made by Sony themselves, and at the moment their release schedule is looking strangely slim, when compared to Nintendo’s.
Sony is known to have several projects in development; it’s just easy to forget that because most of them lack any real details, or even vague release windows.
Until the company makes some formal announcements via a first party focused State of Play, or at least a blog post, we won’t have anything else confirmed, but in the meantime we’ve listed every major upcoming PlayStation release known to exist, plus some popular rumoured ones.
God Of War: Ragnarök
The sequel to 2018’s God Of War has been the centre of a lot of drama as of late. Between zero updates since last year’s trailer, conflicting reports of delays, and rumours that a release date was going to be shared before the end of June, fans are more ravenous for news than they’ve ever been.
Some, including producer Cory Barlog, have insisted that the game hasn’t been delayed, despite what others think, and it’s been claimed that Sony will have it out by this November.
Santa Monica Studio already has another project in the pipeline too, possibly unrelated to God Of War, but even less has been shared about that.
The Last Of Us Remake & Factions
Sony’s other prominent 2022 release isn’t even a new game, but a PlayStation 5 remake of the first The Last Of Us. It’s scheduled for September 5, but its mere existence is controversial for being a remake of a game that’s barely 10 years old and yet still costs a full £70.
Naughty Dog is also busy with its Last Of Us multiplayer project, which was meant to be part of The Last Of Us Part 2 before evolving into its own game. Two years later and all we have is one piece of concept art for it, but nothing else aside from it being as big, if not bigger, than the studio’s single-player games.
Studio co-president Neil Druckmann has suggested that Naughty Dog will move onto a new IP at some point but hasn’t ruled out a third Last Of Us. Plus, there’s chatter of work having already started on a new Uncharted.
Ghost Of Tsushima 2
Admittedly, this one hasn’t been announced yet, but there’s enough writing on the wall to say that a sequel is happening. Aside from Ghost Of Tsushima being a critical and commercial success, multiple job ads at studio Sucker Punch blatantly allude to it.
Bend Studio’s new IP
Days Gone may not be getting a sequel (no matter how much fans ask for it), but developer Sony Bend has begun work on its next project. All we know about it is that it’s a new IP and it will feature multiplayer and an open world. So, you can also cross off a Syphon Filter revival from your wish list.
MLB The Show 23

Technically unannounced, this one’s guaranteed to already be in development considering its an annual release like EA’s FIFA games. San Diego Studio is obviously making it (it’s made nothing but MLB The Show games since 2018), although it’s likely to be multiplatform like the last two games.
Spider-Man 2 & Wolverine
Insomniac Games is certainly keeping itself busy, not just with a sequel to its 2018 Spider-Man game but a brand new title starring everyone’s favourite Canadian, Wolverine. Both were announced for PlayStation 5 last year, with the former scheduled for 2023 and the latter not coming until much, much later.
In 2021, the studio was also looking for staff to work on an unannounced multiplayer project, one rumoured to be Marvel related, and we can safely expect a follow-up to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at some point.
PixelOpus’ project
The developers of Concrete Genie announced it was making a new PlayStation 5 exclusive last year. We know it’s being made in Unreal Engine 5 and in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation (the studio behind Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and its sequel), but we’ve heard nothing else about it since.
Bluepoint Games’ project
The success of its Shadow Of The Colossus and Demon’s Souls remakes meant it was only a matter of time until Sony snapped up Bluepoint Games and made it a first party studio. Rather than task it with another remake, however, Bluepoint is working on its first original game since 2006’s Blast Factor.
Bungie’s projects
Assuming Sony isn’t lying, its acquisition of Bungie won’t see its future projects be PlayStation exclusives, but we wouldn’t be surprised if any PlayStation 5 version gets special treatment or releases as a timed exclusive.
Nothing official has been shared, but previous job listings point to its next post-Destiny games being a dungeon crawler role-player and a competitive multiplayer game, assuming they are indeed separate projects. One of them may be titled Matter since Bungie trademarked the name years ago.
Multiple live-service games
Sony has at least 10 live service titles it wants out over the next four years, although what they are is a mystery. We know Bungie will be assisting (its experience with Destiny is why Sony bought it in the first place) and one of them is in development at Haven, a new studio which Sony also acquired earlier this year.
Another of them could be in development at PlayStation London, the studio behind 2019’s VR action game Blood & Truth. Its job listings mention a new online multiplayer IP for PlayStation 5, although there’s nothing concrete to suggest it’ll be a live service.
The Last Of Us multiplayer game is also believed to be one of the 10, although that’s not been confirmed by Sony.
Guerrilla Games’ secret game
Nothing has been formally announced by Guerrilla Games, but we know it’s working on something thanks to the LinkedIn page for one Simon Larouche. He joined the studio in 2018 and is game director for, literally, a ‘secret game.’ Aside from that, a Horizon Forbidden West sequel is inevitable, and it’s co-developing the PlayStation VR2 spin-off Horizon Call Of The Mountain with Firesprite.
Firesprite’s rumoured projects
Speaking of the Liverpool studio, it’s also meant to be working on at least two other projects. Job listings on its website mention a narrative driven adventure game and a multiplayer action shooter. The latter is speculated to be a new Twisted Metal, which could coincide with the TV show Sony’s making.
Housemarque’s next project
Instead of a Returnal sequel, Housemarque confirmed it’s working on a new IP only a few months ago. No other details have been shared, with Housemarque dodging questions about whether it’s one of the 10 live service games.
Team Asobi’s rumoured platformer
For a free PlayStation 5 tech demo, Astro’s Playroom is more enjoyable than it had any right to be. So, it’s not surprising that Team Asobi is expected to make more games featuring the title character. Details remain a secret, but it’ll likely be another platformer like Astro’s Playroom and VR title Astro Bot: Rescue Mission.
Square Enix exclusives
Rumours of Sony buying Square Enix are easy to believe when the company keeps releasing major exclusives for PlayStation. Not only do we have Forspoken coming later this year, but two very important new Final Fantasy games will be PlayStation 5 only.
The first is Final Fantasy 16, the next mainline entry in the series, in the summer of 2023, followed by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, in the winter.
