Fallout 4's real-time combat was a huge improvement on previous entries. But of course, there had to be one area that retained that iconic Bethesda jank: the stealth system. If one enemy finds you – or even gets a bit riled up – they all know where you are without fail. Playing cautiously can almost feel a bit pointless.
Now, there's a mod to fix that. Stealth and Detection System from Nexus Mods user Urania completely overhauls how the vanilla game's stealth mechanics works, making it so enemies don't communicate telepathically or see through walls to reveal your location.
"Fallout 4's detection system is all messed up, resulting in unnatural enemies that are so unbelievably perceptive", reads the mod's description. "No matter if you are extremely careful to stay out of sight, not make noise, take down enemies that are distant from each other, and hide bodies… as soon as you enter enemy range, they always spot you."
To amend this, the mod aims to be challenging, yet realistic. It makes it so enemy perception is kept high, but not so ridiculous that they can see through cover.
As you can see in the video, Urania is able to stealth kill some enemies without the rest of the gang going hostile. This is because they were all out of sight at the time, rewarding players who wait for enemies to be left alone. Also, if an enemy hears you, they still have to find you, making it a much more realistic experience.
it seems to be a hit so far, with many users saying it's the best stealth mod out now. It's still receiving updates too, so fixes can be made if issues arise. And on top of all that, you can edit the enemies' detection system yourself with the mod, just in case the base settings aren't challenging enough for you.
Fallout 4 is available to play on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
