After a long day of slaying monsters and demons, it’d be nice to kick back and relax on your own personal tropical island. And maybe take a vacation where you laze on the beach and harvest vegetables in between naps. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to do just that in Final Fantasy 14 thanks to the Island Sanctuary.
Revealed in July’s Letter From the Producer livestream and coming in update 6.2, Bright Memory, the Island Sanctuary will let players build a farm, father resources, raise some animals, and sell produce. It’s basically Stardew Valley, but in Final Fantasy 14. Producer and director Yoshi-P didn’t have much to say about the Island Sanctuary at the time, but in a new interview with Famitsu (with translation by Google), he lays out a few of the Island Sanctuary’s features.
For starters, there’s no questline or story associated with the Island Sanctuary. There’s a short introductory sidequest that directs you to the island, but other than that, the player sets their own schedule.
Yoshi-P describes the island as “big” enough to “live there forever.” It’ll have its own weather system, although that weather will primarily be sunny, according to Yoshi-P. It will never snow on the Island Sanctuary as it's in a tropical location.
He also said the Island Sanctuary will have nothing tying it to the broader game. There are no tokens or other exchange mediums players can use to get items from outside the Island Sanctuary, and conversely, no outside items from Final Fantasy 14 can enhance what the player does on the Island Sanctuary.
Yoshi-P also mentioned that there will be some level of automation possible on the Island Sanctuary, likely similar to Stardew Valley with its sprinkler systems. There will be some kind of weekly timer that will reset some aspects of the island, but Yoshi-P didn’t make it clear just what those aspects will be.
We probably won’t have to wait too long to find out. Another Letter From the Producer livestream is set for Friday, August 12, which will surely provide more details on the Island Sanctuary and update 6.2.
