Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster Will Have 3D Overhauled Opera, With Actual Singing

We’re just days away from Final Fantasy 6’s return as the last of Square Enix’s Pixel Remasters, and what’s likely to be the final teaser showcases an iconic scene remade with actual voice acting and a 3D environment.

Final Fantasy 6’s opera scene has been remade in the same HD-2D style as Octopath Traveler, Actraiser Renaissance, and the upcoming Live A Live remake. The castle and opera stage has been fully rendered in a pixilated 3D style while the sprites remain two-dimensional. On top of that, the singing itself is now fully voiced in seven languages, including Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Korean (with thanks to Famitsu for the details).

You can see the new opera scene in action in an unlisted promotional trailer that will presumably go live shortly.

This remade opera scene could be indicative of what to expect in Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster, which promises to be the most extensive remake of the original six Final Fantasy games. Square Enix might have even snuck in more HD-2D graphics than just the opera scene if Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda’s recent comments are any indication.

In a new YouTube series, Matsuda noted that Square Enix has plans to remake more classic games in the same HD-2D art style as Octopath Traveler and Live A Live, with 2D sprites on a 3D background. Matsuda didn’t say which games would get the HD-2D remake treatment, but it does sound like Square Enix is getting pretty good at remastering old games in this particular style.

Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster arrives on February 23 on PC and consoles, and then Live A Live gets its remaster later this summer. After that, who knows what else might receive the same HD-2D treatment?
