First Look At God Of War Ragnarok Combat Revealed

Game Informer has shared the first look at God of War Ragnarok's combat, showcasing some of Kratos' new moves.

Even though Sony has started slowly releasing more information about God of War Ragnarok over the last few months, there's still a lot we don't know about the game. In fact, aside from some sections of the first trailer, we've barely seen any gameplay at all and, up until now, hadn't seen any unedited footage.

Thankfully, Game Informer's cover game for September is God of War Ragnarok, which means that we're finally getting some more details about the game, and have been given our first look at its combat in a new minute-long clip. The clip shows Kratos and Atreus taking on some enemies in what looks to be the Dwarven realm of Svartalfheim, and it showcases Sony Santa Monica's mantra of letting players "play with your food".

One of the more noteworthy additions to combat is some much-needed verticality. The last game didn't let Kratos jump, but this one lets him use the Blades of Chaos to grapple up to ledges, as well as letting him leap off of them by running at them, leading to more mid-air action than before. The arena that Kratos and Atreus find themselves in is also much more open than anything in the last game.

Kratos is also seen using two new shields, Dauntless and Stonewall, which let the player choose between having a parry or being able to block more strikes. Atreus' combat abilities are also highlighted, and he is seen assisting Kratos by shooting and stunning enemies in a manner similar to the last game.

Another new feature is that both the Blades of Chaos and the Leviathan Axe now have signature moves that can be activated by pressing the triangle button. The Leviathan Axe can use Frost Awaken, which infuses it with ice, while the Blades of Chaos can be lit on fire by using a move called Whiplash.
