Fortnite update 24.40 release date delay: Epic confirms new launch for Ranked

Fortnite developer Epic Games has announced a new release date for update 24.40 on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Originally tipped to launch on May 16, the delayed Fortnite update will now be released on May 17 instead. With the new update ushering in the release of the Ranked Play Season Zero beta, it’s believed Epic is ironing out one or two issues ahead of the launch.

Epic announced the news on Twitter, alongside confirmation of the new release date.

“We will now be targeting May 17th for the release of v24.40 alongside the newly announced Ranked,” reads an Epic tweet.

“We’ll provide another update with details about v24.40’s expected downtime as we have it.”

If it’s anything like previous updates, the exact timings will be announced later in the evening (of May 16).

The game is expected to go offline at around 8am BST UK time, before returning at 10am BST.

You’ll need to download and install the update if you want to play online in Battle Royale, Creative and Zero Build.

Ranked Play gives players the opportunity to climb from Bronze to Unreal level by winning games, match placement and eliminating opponents.

It all begins with Season Zero on May 16, which serves as a beta of sorts. Ranked Play Season Zero lasts until the end of Battle Royale Chapter 4, Season 3 – at which point it will be replaced by the official launch.

Epic explains more: “Your starting Battle Royale rank and Zero Build rank in Season Zero will be based on your past match performance, as well as your performance in your first Ranked Battle Royale and Ranked Zero Build match.

“For Battle Royale and Zero Build, you’ll only need to play one Ranked match to have your rank revealed.”

In addition to Ranked Play, the new Fortnite update will introduce the latest pop culture crossover, as Spider-Verse skins join the item shop.
