Ghost Song is a tough-as-nails Metroidvania indie that draws blood from the same vein as Dark Souls, thanks to an unforgiving combat system that gives you next to no room for error. And it's due to these complexities that learning how to actually beat the game comes with its fair share of hurdles.

It comes as no surprise, seeing a game that takes its inspiration from games like Metroid and Castlevania incorporate a ludicrously intense and downright relentless combat system. Having said that, onboarding just a few essential tips can definitely help to alleviate the frustration that comes with the slew of unavoidable losses.

Enable Highlight Character Mode

Even during the brightest moments, Ghost Song can still be awfully opaque and hard to navigate. The good news is, you can actually enable Highlight Character, which essentially puts a glowing aura around your protagonist. Doing this will help you uncover hidden areas, as well as give you a clearer idea of the world you're exploring. So, if you're having trouble adapting to the darkness, be sure to head into your Game Settings, and hit Highlight Character.

Of course, there's always the option to boost the brightness in the game, too. If you're still struggling to wrap your head around what's what and who's who, then go ahead and give the Brightness slider a nudge to the right.

Don't Go Left

Once you begin your journey down in the neon metropolis, you will be presented with two directions to travel in. For the sake of keeping your head on your shoulders and learning the basic controls, you're going to want to head right.

If you take the left, then you will eventually bump into an overpowered enemy that can whittle down your health in a matter of blows. Therefore, before you summon any amount of bravery to help unearth the unknown, be sure to explore the path to the right to get a feel for the basics. Once you have discovered your first Save Point and upgrade station, you should have enough experience to be able to tackle the alternate path.

Save, Save, Save

In Ghost Song, dying on a regular basis comes with the territory. In fact, nearly everything can kill you, which means you're bound to face death a handful of times over the course of your journey. And if you do happen to meet a bitter end at the hand of an enemy, then you'll have to start back from the beginning, or at the last save point.

The problem is, save points aren't all that common, which means you should always take the opportunity to back up your game whenever you stumble upon one. A Save Point looks like a blue neon leaf, and can be found in random locations, usually near upgrade stations.

Upgrade And Level Up Whenever Possible

The more you explore the world that Ghost Song has to offer, the more likely you are to bump in upgrade stations, which are also referred to as Statues. At these Statues, you will be able to do one of three things: Level Up, Fast Travel, or Make Repairs. Keeping on top of your level and upgrading your three attributes is crucial, and should be done whenever you acquire enough NanoGel.

The three attributes you have are Vigor, Resolve, and GunPower. To make a dent in the story, you're going to need to distribute your collected NanoGel to each of these in a sensible order, which will, in turn, make you more powerful.

• Vigor: Increases your HP, Vigor, and Power Capacity
• Resolve: Increases your HP, Energy, Stamina, Resolve, and Power Capacity
• GunPower: Increases your GunPower, and Power Capacity

Always Collect Your Lost NanoGel

Much like its Metroidvania cousins, Ghost Song employs a gameplay feature that makes death far more of a taxing experience than it needs to be. Dying, unfortunately, means losing all of your collected NanoGel, as well as a floating corpse in the destination that you perished in during the previous run. To reclaim what is rightfully yours, you will need to return to where you died and pick it up.

If it isn't too much of a trek, you should always aim to reclaim your old resources, as NanoGel can be hard to come by in certain locations. Recovering your lost NanoGel will also give you a second opportunity to defeat the enemy that bested you the first time around. Beating it will net you additional NanoGel and yet another soul for your archive.

Break Everything

It may not look like it, what with most of the world being shrouded in darkness, but a lot of areas can actually be destroyed with a well-placed bullet or two. To give you an idea of the sorts of items and terrains that can be destroyed, you should keep an eye out for tattered blocks or walls that appear to be crumbling.

To help get a clearer picture of the terrain you're currently exploring, enable the Highlight Character slider in the Game Settings. If all else fails, then enter the manual aiming mode and fire in all four directions. Chances are, something nearby will explode and open up a new route for you to explore.

Kill The Small Fry

Ghost Song isn't exactly short on deadly little insects for you to obliterate, which means there's also no reason for you to glide over them without obtaining their sacred fruits. And when we say sacred fruits, we're talking about NanoGel, the very valuable substance that will save your skin whenever trouble comes to pass.

The good news is, everyone and everything in Ghost Song has a little NanoGel to spare, which means you can take it for yourself by killing whatever crosses your path. Once you've accumulated enough of the substance, you can use it to upgrade your attributes and repair your broken armor. You will need to harvest as much NanoGel as possible during your time in the underworld, as a lack of it will lead to huge problems later down the line.

Let The Purple Light Be Your Guide

Metroidvania games certainly have a way with making you feel isolated and without any form of guidance. Unfortunately, Ghost Song is no different, as it also drops you into an open world that bears little to no helping hands to nudge you in the right direction whatsoever.

The upside to this, though, is that there are purple lights scattered throughout the world that reveal new areas. If you happen to see one, then you can rest assured that you're probably on the right track. If you're at a loose end, then let the violet beacons be your guide. Chances are, following a series of purple beacons will lead you to your next objective, or perhaps even to a hidden location with more resources to harvest.

Avoid The Lower Levels

It's simple, really: the lower the biome, the tougher the enemy. So, if you want to be able to stand a chance when making your gradual descent, it's definitely worth upgrading your attributes to at least Level 7 or 8 before going any further. Once you have leveled up your Vigor, Resolve, and GunPower to a respectable level, you should have enough tools to be able to tackle the deadlier foes that aimlessly wander in the bottomless abyss.

Of course, tough enemies can be found in just about every corner of Ghost Song's world, but you will come to discover that the one-hit wonders do tend to submerge a little deeper than most bog-standard creatures. Therefore, before you go potting around in the darker depths, make sure you're fully equipped to tackle what idles ahead.
