Development of a number of video games has been affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It seems you can now add the GoldenEye 007 remake to that list. Despite a variety of signs indicating the game is finally ready to be officially revealed, there is still nothing concrete from the team behind it, and apparently the war between Russia and Ukraine is the reason for that.
The latest update regarding whether a GoldenEye remake is happening or not has come about thanks to an inquisitive fan who is clearly sick of waiting for confirmation. “Where is my 1v100 and goldeneye? I need it,” Darren Unger tweeted, tagging a number of people who might be able to answer them in the process. Jez Corden jokingly replied that they had never heard of either of those projects, while Jeff Grubb offered up some fresh information on both.
“Goldeneye is still in limbo because of the war. 1 v 100's team lead left Microsoft. I don't know what that means for the game,” Grubb replied. Many expected the long-rumored GoldenEye project to be revealed during Summer Game Fest. Especially when Xbox achievements for the still-unannounced game appeared around the same time. However, the Xbox Bethesda showcase where it was most likely to show up focused largely on Starfield and Redfall.
GoldenEye isn't the only game to have been affected by the conflict in Ukraine. Naoki Yoshida recently admitted Final Fantasy 16's second trailer was postponed due to the war. Development of Stalker 2 was put on pause for a few months but appears to be underway again, and Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp's launch remains indefinitely on the shelf. The remake was slated to launch right after Russia declared war on Ukraine.
As for those of you who have now been waiting 25 years for more GoldenEye, there are a couple of things you can do to fill the void until it is finally officially announced. A documentary celebrating its 25th birthday detailing everything about the game's impact and how it was made is available now. You can also play the demo of Agent 64: Spies Never Die on Steam which is clearly an homage to the iconic N64 game.
