Gotham Knights Treats Tim Drake’s Bisexuality As "Just A Part Of Who He Is"

It appears that Warner Bros. wants to be as faithful to the comics as possible with Gotham Knights. While that will be appreciated by comic book fans, I don't remember a comic where Batman is surely, definitely dead and stays dead. However, another aspect that the game will stay true to is Tim Drake's bisexuality. The third Robin came out as bisexual in the comics, and Warner Bros. will continue that in Gotham Knights.

As spotted by CBR, the Gotham Knights dev team recently held a Q&A session on the game's Discord channel, where one fan asked if Tim's bisexuality will be discussed. Narrative director, Amy Lemay responded saying that while Tim is bisexual in the game, it's not really a major plot point during the events of Gotham Knights.

"Tim is bi in the comics, therefore Tim is bi in the game," said Lemay. "It's not a huge plot point – it's just a part of who he is and this comes up in the character interactions we have in the Belfry within the scope of how normal conversations would bring this up. Other NPCs and characters in the game also offer forms of representation, in ways which reflect the world we live in."

Back in May, Gotham Knights didn't exactly handle a major aspect of another character too well. The version of Batgirl we see in Gotham Knights is after she recovered from the debilitating injuries at the hands of the Joker. Unfortunately, the description for Batgirl, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon, said that she overcame her injuries through "raw willpower and determination.” At the time, it caused a bit of a controversy as it perpetuated the "Super Crip" disability trope in which characters recover from such injuries through training in a heroic but rather unreal manner.

After being called out for ableism, creative director Patrick Redding said, "As with many of our characters and plot elements, the circumstances around Barbara’s injuries differ in some important ways from how it’s been portrayed in the comics. Barbara has been through multiple surgeries followed by a lot of physical therapy and pain management [in Gotham Knights].”
