Rockstar attempted to quench the first of Grand Theft Auto fans eagerly awaiting news about GTA 6 last year by remastering three of the series' best-loved games. The Definitive Edition brought together remastered versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. The problem was, the collection wasn't all that impressive at launch. The game was almost unplayable when it rained, and a litany of other bugs got things off to a very bad start.
Rockstar rolled out a major update for The Trilogy this week, and if you have returned to the games since it went live, you may well have noticed how different they are. Some changes are more subtle of course, and tweaks will continue to be discovered over the coming days. A few minor but arguably important alterations brought about by the patch have already been stumbled upon.
The first comes in the form of a change to Claude's attitude in GTA 3. The lead character never actually speaks throughout the entire game, which is a little odd. However, in the original version, Claude would flip off traffic when NPC drivers honked at him. For some reason, that quirk was removed in the remaster but has returned thanks to the new update, as you can see below.
Another big gripe with The Trilogy at launch was the designs of some characters. Not just nameless NPCs you see on the street, but even characters you interact with. Even CJ himself, the protagonist in San Andreas, could have looked a lot better. Good news on that front, as CJ's jeans now look a lot more PS5 and a lot less PS2. Okay, PS5 might still be a stretch, but you get the gist.
Suffice to say, there's still a long way to go before these games are perfect. With GTA 5's next-gen version now just weeks away, Definitive Edition owners might have to wait longer between patches for the time being. Hopefully it won't be forgotten entirely., but on the bright side, the three games have been improved enough that playing them is a pleasure rather than a chore, for the most part anyway.
