Guardians Of The Galaxy launch underperformed but sales picking up in 2022

Square Enix isn’t too thrilled with Guardians Of The Galaxy’s launch sales, but things have steadily improved over the last few months.

In a recent financial report from Square Enix for 2021, the company revealed that its premium games didn’t turn as much of a profit compared to the same financial period in 2020.

It singles out the Eidos-Montréal developed Guardians Of The Galaxy in particular, saying that its launch sales didn’t meet Square Enix’s expectations, although it didn’t provide any actual figures.

It’s fortunately not all doom and gloom, however, as Square Enix admits that there has been a growth in sales since November, one that has continued in 2022, and the company fully intends to ‘expand sales to make up for the title’s slow start.’

It also acknowledges that it’s thanks to premium releases like Guardians Of The Galaxy that they generated more revenue in that department for Q3 compared to Q1.

Guardians Of The Galaxy was one of the biggest surprises of 2021. While it offered precisely the opposite of everything players didn’t like about the Square Enix Avengers game (namely the lack of any live service elements), there seemed to be very little enthusiasm surrounding its announcement.

It went on to receive very favourable reviews across the board thanks to its combat, art design, a soundtrack filled with classic 80s hits, and a nuanced narrative that gives each of the titular Guardians their own compelling character arc (even if Rocket’s an unlikeable ass for the majority of it).

In fact, the game won the award for Best Narrative at The Game Awards 2021, beating out Life Is Strange: True Colors (which funnily enough also involves coping with grief and was published by Square Enix) and Game Of The Year winner It Takes Two.

Guardians Of The Galaxy certainly appears to have fared better than Square Enix’s other Marvel offering, Avengers, in terms of fan reception. Avengers has been mired with one controversy after another but the live service is still pushing forward with a second year of content updates.

Crystal Dynamics still isn’t ready to reveal its next content roadmap, with the latest blog post only promising several changes and improvements. For example, the next patch, due in March, will rework the War Table and mission select system and further balance gear.

It’s believed that the next playable character will be She-Hulk, aka the Hulk’s cousin, but there is no official confirmation and Crystal Dynamics has yet to even confirm when the next DLC character can be expected.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
