Halo Infinite Is Haemorrhaging Players On Steam

Halo Infinite has been a massive success ever since the multiplayer was shadow-dropped. Like any multiplayer, it has had its problems, but 343 Industries has been committed and transparent when it comes to fixing them. Then came the campaign – it's new open world formula and grappling hook based traversal cemented it as one of the best games of 2021. Microsoft recently announced that the game has garnered over 20 million players since launch.

While Xbox Game Pass was the primary avenue for this, it even garnered an all time concurrent players peak of over 270K on Steam. However, the game's performance on the platform appears to have dwindled since then. At the time of writing, Halo Infinite is ranked 113th with barely 9,182 current players, according to SteamDB. It's below Smite – a game that came out in 2014 – and just above Fall Guys.

While the current players number doesn't necessarily tell the full story, taking a look at the 24-hour peak shows a similar trend. The game only received 28,668 players in the past 24 hours, leaving it in the 55th spot, between Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord and NBA 2K22. That's hardly a position worthy of a franchise of Halo's size.

Unfortunately this trend isn't just restricted to Steam. Not many people have been streaming or watching Halo Infinite on Twitch either. In January, Infinite was viewed only for a collective 5,609,458 hours – placing it 45th on the list, below Red Dead Redemption 2, and above Smite. Just for reference, the top five most-watched games on Twitch for this month, in order, were League of Legends (162m viewer hours), GTA5 (140m), Escape from Tarkov (107m), Valorant (70m), and Rust (61m).

Soon we'll have another metric to measure Halo by. Last week we got to see the first full trailer for Paramount's Halo TV show. It showed Master Chief going toe-to-toe with a couple of laser sword wielding Elites, a bunch of Brutes and Jackals, and also a Cortana who wasn't blue enough for some people. The show will be adapting major plotlines and events from the game series, but appears to be following a timeline of its own.
