The machines in Horizon Forbidden West are deadly, and you'll have to face down them all at some point. Early on in the story, you'll come up against a Slitherfang – the new, and very large, snake machine in the game.
These things can certainly be more than a little intimidating, and you'll see more of them throughout the game – as such, you'll want to know the best ways to take it out. Here's everything you need to know about Slitherfangs.
Slitherfang Summary
This colossal machine is fast, and will go for the attack every chance it gets. It will often hold itself upwards while baring its metal fangs, and proceeds to spit acid or dash in your direction. They are also capable of burrowing into the ground and leaping out from under you. The tail can charge up and shoot lightning from the tip.
The strengths and weaknesses can be seen below:
Weaknesses | Strengths |
---|---|
Fire Damage | Shock Damage |
Frost Damage | Purgewater Damage |
Plasma Damage | Acid Damage |
To override this machine, you must unlock the data from Cauldron KAPPA. To review the loot available from the Slitherfang, check through the entry once you have scanned one with your Focus – this will give you a breakdown of each component and how to get it from the machine.
How To Defeat A Slitherfang
When going up against a Slitherfang, you'll want to bring it down quickly and avoid every attack it has. The machines are ruthless – here are a few tips that you should focus on when fighting a Slitherfang.
- Keep Your Distance – As with most larger machines, they can be on top of you before you know it. As such, you'll want to stay as far away from it as possible. Using a Sharpshot Bow or Spike Thrower is the best bet.
- Use Cover Where Possible – While keeping a distance is key, you also don't want to be caught out in the open. As such, try to use cover where you can – whether it be ruins, a rock, or weaving between trees nearby. The Slitherfang can fire acid projectiles or shoot lightning, so anything between you and it is only going to help.
- Aim For The Metalbite Sac – The Slitherfang will hold itself upright often, exposing the more vulnerable parts of itself. There is a Metalbite Sac – containing the acid it fires off – that you can shoot to explode. This will reduce its attacks, but also deal devastating damage.
- Try To Destroy The Earthgrinders – Just above the Metalbite Sac are Earthgrinders – these spinning metal cylinders are used for traversal and digging, but will hurt a lot if destroyed. While going for the Metalbite Sac, also aim to take these out. This is the best way to get in a large amount of damage early on in the fight against a Slitherfang. It won't have much left in it after all of these have been destroyed.
- Be Ready To Dodge The Attacks – While you are keeping your distance and aiming for the weak points, the Slitherfang will be doing what it can to make you stop. Cover might stop the acid projectiles and lightning, but it won't stop the Slitherfang lunging at you – you'll need to dodge out of the way before it hits, as these attacks can deal big damage.
With all of that, you're ready to go up against the Slitherfangs of the west. Just watch out for the big attacks, and aim for the weak points it doesn't protect. After that, give it everything else you've got, and it will fall in no time. If you're on a harder difficulty, you may want to focus a few more attacks on the other components of the Slitherfang, but the majority of the damage will still be done.
