- Best Abilities Overall
The beautiful thing about gaming is that it's a medium that you can personally experience. There are plenty of titles that take time to create detailed and epic stories through dialogue, narration, and other forms of writing. However, since you get to play through the story yourself, a game has the power to clearly express itself through visuals and sound alone.
The sci-fi adventure Hyper Light Drifter does this in spades. It presents a huge and mysterious alien world with an unknown warrior exploring it all alone. Because of this, they'll need to rely on their equipment and every ability they can master. Here's everything you need to know about using the best abilities in the game.
Gaining Abilities And Upgrades
The Drifter is a very capable fighter who is able to perform incredible feats in terms of movement and combat. Though they'll learn much from being out in the field, there are certain characters they'll need to visit to gain and upgrade abilities.
Sword Abilities | Dealing with the Drifter's main attack, these can be learned from the Sword Master in the Dojo. |
---|---|
Movement Abilities | Focusing on the Drifter's mobility, these can be learned from the Dash Master at the Dash Arena. |
Gun Upgrades | The Drifter's secondary weapons can be given more ammo by the Bandit in the Weapons Shop. |
Carry Upgrades | The Drifter is able to carry a limited amount of Grenades and Medkits but can be made to carry more by visiting the Techie at the Tech Shop and the Apothecary at the Medicine Shop respectively. |
Best Abilities Overall
The Drifter will have quite a repertoire of abilities to use and get a feel for, but there are some that are far more useful than others.
Heavy Strike
This charge attack allows the Drifter to swing their sword in a large circle hitting multiple enemies. It's their strongest sword-based attack making it very useful for dealing heavy damage against bosses and taking out multiple enemies in a group quickly.
Bullet Deflect
Just like in the action movies of yore, this allows the Drifter to swing their sword at projectiles and launch back towards opponents. Not only does this ability give them another defense against ranged enemies, but it also allows them to conserve ammo while still being able to deal damage from a distance.
Bullet Absorb
An unusual Dash ability that allows the Drifter to generate a shield that absorbs bullets while dashing. Even though the Dash is already effective at dodging attacks and projectiles, it's not invincible. Having this ability allows the Drifter to stay mobile while adding an extra layer of protection.
Chain Dash
In terms of mobility, this is what the Drifter needs. By timing Dash button presses, you can keep dashing while controlling the direction. This ability can take some time to master and using it carelessly can lead you into danger and off ledges. However, it's worth the risk as being able to use it well will significantly cut down on exploration time and make combat so much easier.
Grenade
Though not technically an ability, it's worth it to pick up the Grenade weapon from the Techie as some as you can. It's the only ranged AoE attack that the Drifter has, it's powerful and can be used infinitely due to recharging. By trading in an extra three Gearbits to the Techie, you can carry up to two of them.
