Inti Creates and Sunsoft have announced that Blaster Master Zero 3, the epic conclusion to the new Blaster Master saga, will be hitting PC, PS4, and Switch on July 29, 2021. Revealed during the New Game Plus Expo today, this latest installment will see protagonist Jason return to what seems to be the original planet from the NES title and put a stop to this galactic threat once and for all.
It’s interesting to see that Inti Creates is skipping the timed Switch exclusivity this time out. The previous two installments landed on Switch ahead of ports to other platforms, though maybe the success of the series on Steam has spurred this decision. Thankfully, the PC release will be coming to both Steam and the Epic Games Store, so we won’t need to deal with gamer rage over a meaningless decision.
When it released back in 2017, Blaster Master Zero set the benchmark for retro revivals. It certainly had some hiccups in pacing and balance, but it was a brilliant revitalization of a series many had forgotten about. Its sequel, released a few years later, would improve virtually every aspect of the experience to create a rather thrilling side-scroller.
To say I have high hope for this final iteration is putting it lightly. Inti Creates hasn’t really failed me when it comes to games, as evidenced by last year’s rather solid Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2. Considering I mostly know what to expect, I have a feeling this summer is going to be a great time to be a retro enthusiast.
