It’s the end of the year, which is the perfect time to ask fans what they want to see in 2023. And what people want to see is a Splatoon anime.
Japanese fan site Anime! Anime! (via Go Nintendo) recently posted the results of its annual year-end poll for the property that fans most want to see turned into an anime. The poll was conducted between December 3 and December 11, with 35 percent of respondents being male, 60 percent female, and five percent other. Of those that replied, 55 percent were 19 and under, about a quarter were in their 20s, and 20 percent were older than that. So a pretty young crowd, generally.
Splatoon took the top spot, up from second place in last year’s survey. Xenoblade Chronicles also got a bump, likely due to the recently-released Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and The Legend of Zelda comes in at third, although I suspect that’ll change with the release of Tears of the Kingdom next year.
Here’s the full list for your perusal.
- Splatoon
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- The Legend of Zelda
- Undertale
- Fire Emblem: Three Houses
- Animal Crossing
- Kingdom Hearts
- Minecraft
- Jack Jeanne
- Buddy Mission Bond
People seemed really into the idea of a Splatoon anime. One noted it would be a great way to learn more about the world of Splatoon and why humanity died out to be replaced by squid and octopus people. Others simply think it'd be a great idea for an action-oriented anime.
Minecraft making the list at all is an intriguing possibility, and one that Microsoft might want to listen to considering how badly it wants Xbox to make inroads in Japan. But personally, my money is behind Undertale. That game has an amazing story that would absolutely be enhanced if it were to be turned into a 24-episode anime series. Maybe 48 if we want to get in the sequels too.
