Possessing one of the most devastating abilities in League Of Legends, Renata Glasc finds her home in the Support role, crowd controlling enemies and providing unique utility for her allies.
Her Hostile Takeover ultimate has the potential to swing the game in her team's favor, and there are sure to be many highlight clips of dragon steals and Berserk Pentakills.
This guide will explain Renata's abilities and how best to utilize them in all stages of the game, as well as provide recommendations for her rune pages, item builds, and summoner spells.
Renata Ability Overview
Ability | Description | Tips |
---|---|---|
Passive: Leverage | Innate: Renata's basic attacks mark enemies for six seconds, dealing max health bonus damage if they were unmarked. Allies damaging attacks and abilities against marked targets also consume the mark. Attacking a marked enemy will refresh the duration, and only one enemy may be marked at a time. |
|
Q: Handshake | Active: Renata fires a hook in the target direction, dealing magic damage to the first enemy hit and rooting them, during which they are revealed and Renata is slowed and unable to declare attacks. Recast: Renata knocks the target in the specified direction, dealing the same damage to enemies they pass through and stunning them if the thrown target is a champion. |
|
W: Bailout | Active: Renata enhances herself or the target allied champion for five seconds, granting the target bonus attack speed in addition to bonus movement speed while they are moving towards nearby visible enemy champions and minions, increasing in effectiveness over the duration. Duration is reset upon securing a takedown or assisting within six seconds of one. If the target takes fatal damage while Bailout is active, they are restored to full health but will take ticking true damage until death. Damage is stopped upon securing a takedown or assisting within six seconds of one, and the champion is set to a portion of their max health. |
|
E: Loyalty Program | Active: Renata instantly strikes targets around her before sending out a rocket to the target location, hitting enemies along its path and exploding upon reaching its target location. Renata and allies struck are granted a shield and enemies struck are dealt magic damage and are slowed. |
|
R: Hostile Takeover | Active: Renata projects forth a cloud of toxic gas, granting vision, and turning all enemy champions and minions it passes over Berserk for a duration. Berserk causes afflicted targets to go insane, granting them increased attack speed and size and forces them to basic attack the nearest unit, regardless of being allied, enemy, or neutral. They prioritize attacking their allies, then neutral units, then Renata's allies, then Renata herself. |

For leveling abilities, you will want to focus on strengthening Renata's poke in lane. Maxing Loyalty Program will help with reliably whittling down her enemies and granting you engage opportunities. Maxing Bailout second is preferred, as you will be seeking to buff your carry's attack and movement speed upon entering mid-game teamfights.
The recommended level order is: E > Q > W > E > E > R > E > W > E > W > R > W > W > Q > Q > R > Q > Q
For your summoner spells you should always be taking:
- Flash (your only source of mobility)
- Ignite (to make the most of your aggressive lane playstyle)
Renata Gameplay Overview
Laning Phase
Renata excels in an aggressive lane matchup, as her long-range poke and engage potential can allow you and your ADC to dominate the lane. Harassing with Loyalty Program can be very reliable, as the enemies cannot shelter behind their minions to avoid the projectile.
Once an enemy is slowed, look for a hook with Handshake. Depending on the situation you can either choose to drag the enemy closer towards you or slam them into their teammate for a stun. Occasionally the root alone will be enough to generate a favorable skirmish, and Renata can do this relatively risk-free thanks to her range.
Despite your range, Renata suffers from a severe lack of mobility. You will nearly always want to be applying for Bailout onto your ADC, and this leaves you with next to no options to escape. Holding onto Flash will be crucial to survive, and you will need to be aware of your positioning, as being engaged upon results in a strong chance of your death.
Renata is also fairly squishy, although the shield provided by Loyalty Program can slightly aid in her survival. Therefore, your best options are to harass from a safe distance, especially with your basic attack. The bonus damage applied with each proc can be very significant in turning a fight, and to make the most out of Renata's kit you will want to play aggressively by reapplying the debuff after it has been procced.
Renata especially struggles against these champions:
- Nautilus, due to his extreme durability and hook potential, if he engages with you then you will struggle to escape.
- Xerath, he does what you do but better. Longer range and higher damage mean it will become a skill matchup for you, but expect to get out traded and poked down.
- Blitzcrank, thanks to your lack of mobility a Rocket Grab is disastrous for you, and you will need to remain vigilant against it.
In lane, your Ultimate is generally at its weakest. Normally only having two targets to hit, one of them being a low damage champion, means a lot of the utility is left wanting. The cloud moves quite slowly but is compensated by a very wide hitbox, meaning you can fairly reliably land it within the confines of the lane.
Try not to overlap your Handshake with Hostile Takeover, as you want to let the enemies attack each other and avoid stunning them during Berserk. Loyalty Program is a very nice way to increase your hit chance, and your full combo gives your ADC a strong chance of securing a kill.
As long as you watch out for bad matchups and keep the proper vision, Renata will be able to trade frequently and successfully in lane, with Bailout sometimes acting as a mini Chronoshift if things go badly wrong.
Mid Game
Entering the Mid Game you will need to synergize with your team across the map. Your damage will now be falling off, and you are likely never killing an enemy by yourself. However, you retain strong pick potential with the E > Q combo and should be looking for opportunities to accelerate your carries with Bailout.
You are not a great roamer, but Bailout can be used in a pinch to either run in or out of a sticky situation, and when it comes to the vision battle, you can easily check bushes for camping enemies with Loyalty Program.
Where Renata shines is around the neutral objective contests. Hostile Takeover is a dangerous ability, and the enemy team needs to respect its strength. A full five-man ultimate can solo win the fight for your team, especially if the enemy team contains a strong auto attacker such as Tryndamere or Master Yi. It is also good against a fed enemy carry, since the stronger they are, the more damage they will inflict upon their allies.
Using the Ultimate so that it entirely covers Dragon/Baron pit is hugely effective, as the enemy Jungler will not want to Smite the monster, due to giving the kill credit over to your team. The couple of seconds you gain can make all the difference in securing a steal, and Renata is at her strongest around these objectives. Being able to safely land abilities from over a wall can help keep you safe, as you will not want to be in the thick of things due to your low durability.
Late Game
When teamfighting, Renata can either hold Handshake for peel or use it as an engage. You are a very easy kill target at this stage of the game, and your main job will be to buff your chosen carry with Bailout while looking to land the most effective Ultimate you can.
Living long in a teamfight is not a huge priority for you, as only your passive is contributing to your team's damage. Instead, keep up vision around the map, and stay grouped with your allies. Being attacked solo is disastrous, as your Ultimate will not save you from a lone aggressor.

Summon Aery Build:
- Summon Aery synergies nicely with Renata's kit, as she can both poke enemies and shield allies. The rest of the page is a very standard Enchanter Support setup, taking biscuits for lane sustain.
