It’s been delayed several times already, but the new Lego Star Wars game is finally finished and has been sent off to manufacturing.
Almost every game has been delayed to some degree by the pandemic but some more than most, with the original plan for Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga being to release it in May 2020. Now though, it’s finally coming out on April 5.
There was always a chance there could be a last minute delay but it’s now been confirmed that the game has gone gold, meaning that it has been sent off for discs to be manufactured. That doesn’t mean it won’t be changed some more before release, especially via day one patches, but it’s now committed to the April release date.
The game has been delayed not just because of the coronavirus but because this is a considerably more ambitious title than previous Lego games, with over 300 playable characters and recreations of all nine core movies.
The situation isn’t all roses though, and there have been serious accusations of crunch at British developer TT Games, with website Polygon claiming that staff have been frustrated at the studio’s reliance on crunch, outdated tools, and the move to a new bespoke game engine instead of just using Unreal Engine.
It’s rumoured that the crunch allegations are part of the reason why Lego is not renewing its exclusive contract with WB Games and TT Games, with recent reports suggesting that Lego has already signed a deal to make sports games with 2K – starting with a football title.
Rumours suggest that TT Games are working on one more Lego licence after Star Wars but beyond that it’s unclear whether they’ll have any more projects with Lego.
Clearly the formula they’ve created is successful though, so it’d be surprising if they didn’t continue with the movie adaptations, even if other developers are used for different types of Lego games.
