The mysterious Little Nightmares series features a host of monstrous creatures, who patrol their territories in an eerie imitation of everyday fears. Placing you in intense situation after intense situation, the Little Nightmares games put you into the small shoes of a child as they navigate this disturbing world, relentlessly pursued by horrifying foes.
Despite the series featuring no dialogue, Little Nightmares creates memorable encounters through its atmosphere and unique art style. Every monster has a different personality, shown through the ways they prowl their environment and hunt you down. These incredible designs help create a terrifying world that leaves you in suspense as you encounter those that populate it, hoping to escape with your life.
10 Granny Dearest: Little Nightmares
The Granny, despite being one of the minor creatures encountered in the DLC, is no less formidable than her fellow residents aboard the Maw. Playing into your fear of what lurks beneath the depths, she swims under the water waiting to knock you in with her.
Glimpses of the Granny show that she looks like an old woman with long limbs, a gaunt body, and a sunken face, possibly caused by living for so long in the Depths. Despite her humanoid appearance, the Granny remains one of the creepiest creatures in the series, representing your fear of the unknown and what might be watching you just out of view when you think you’re finally safe.
9 The Bullies Want More Than Just Your Lunch Money: Little Nightmares 2
While minor enemies in Little Nightmares 2, The Bullies stalk Mono and Six as they explore The School, setting up deadly traps and overpowering you using surprising force if they manage to catch you. In true bully fashion, these creatures are rowdy and mischievous, often causing trouble, making a mess, and even wrestling each other.
At first glance, the Bullies look like human children dressed in their school uniform, but upon further inspection, it’s clear that they’re more doll-like than human. They possess large porcelain heads and black beady eye sockets. Their creepy doll-like appearance and violent tendencies give them an eerie quality that’s only enhanced by their warped playtime activities, which mimic regular children.
8 A Monstrous Tragedy (Monster Six): Little Nightmares 2
During the final chapter of Little Nightmares 2, Six becomes warped by the Transmission – taking on a misshapen appearance with long hair covering her face and twisted, elongated limbs. After attempting to destroy her music box, Mono must dodge Six’s attacks, all while she's amped up by her newfound strength.
Aside from her creepy appearance, Six offers one of the most emotional sequences in the series. The friend you’ve journeyed with throughout the game turns into yet another of the many creatures that hunts you down (a familiar concept for fans of horror titles) in this tragic turn of events.
7 The Craftsman Is More Than A Little Crafty: Very Little Nightmares
The Craftsman appears in the mobile game Very Little Nightmares as an inhabitant of the Nest, who uses his long arms to search for wayward children, running them over with his wheelchair if he catches them. As far as his crafting abilities go, he creates suspiciously lifelike dolls that are placed around the Nest. The Craftsman proves that the only thing scarier than an evil craftsman is one whose specialty is creepy dolls.
This creepy creature bears a striking resemblance to the Boiler Man from Spirited Away, with his spider-like limbs and hunched posture, but that’s where the similarities end. His surgical mask, goggles, and apron are much more reminiscent of a surgeon, though you wouldn’t want to be on his operating table.
6 You’ll Need Patients For This One: Little Nightmares 2
The Patients are some of the creepiest mannequin creatures seen in gaming since the likes of the mysterious Silent Hill series. These grotesque combinations of human and mannequin stand in the dimly lit recesses of The Hospital, waiting to snatch up the unsuspecting Mono.
What makes the Patients so unsettling is that they can only be stopped by pointing your flashlight at them, freezing them in place. You must evade hordes of these terrifying creatures, not knowing if one still lurks in the shadows, waiting for you.
5 The Doctor Will See You Now: Little Nightmares 2
The Doctor is the lead antagonist of The Hospital and the person you have to thank for populating its halls with his horrifying creations. The Doctor takes his job very seriously, crawling on the ceiling like a corrupt Spider-Man, tending to his Patients.
The Doctor is relentless in his pursuit of Mono and Six, lifting tables to check underneath and chasing after you if you’re spotted. Visiting a doctor or the hospital can be a scary experience, a fear this game feeds on: You must evade the creepy Doctor lest you end up as another of his experiments.
4 The Janitor Will Clean You Up: Little Nightmares
The Janitor is one of the creatures you encounter the most in Little Nightmares, imprisoning children who try to escape from the Maw. He possesses tiny legs and distinct elongated arms that can reach you from across the room. Though he can't see you, this doesn’t stop him from catching you. His heightened hearing means even the slightest sound can alert him to your location.
This leads to some of the creepiest moments in the series, as you’ll often have to get up close and personal with the Janitor to sneak past him, making sure to remain silent or use environmental noise as a distraction. His long arms reaching for you is nightmare fuel, and the use of sound in his sections makes for some heart-pounding moments where capture is only moments away.
3 The Teacher Will Teach You A Lesson Or Two: Little Nightmares 2
The Teacher’s class is one you’ll wish you had skipped. This nightmarish creature runs The School, demanding obedience from all of her students. Even the Bullies are scared of her. The Teacher’s mouth is set in a permanent grin, making her a disturbing sight for anybody to behold, but the creepiest part is her ability to stretch her neck to horrifying lengths (similar to the yōkai, Rokurokubi), peering around bookcases and chasing you through vents to gobble you up.
If that's not enough, the Teacher also dishes out her frightening detentions to any misbehaving students. You’ll want to stay in her good books and not disturb her.
2 Tune In To The Thin Man: Little Nightmares 2
The Thin Man’s level-headed nature and stoic way of chasing you throughout The Pale City sets him apart from more violent creatures in the series. He's no less dangerous for it, however. This stretched-out specter possesses supernatural abilities, allowing him to slow down time and use the airwaves to travel ever closer to his prey.
It’s revealed at the end of Little Nightmares 2 that the Thin Man is Mono, imprisoned in the Transmission and forced to grow old, before he’s eventually freed by his younger self and attempts to stop the cycle he’s trapped in. His calculating demeanor, ghostly appearance, and slow walk already made him an eerie character, but his inevitable awful end (poor Mono suffers just as much as some other tragic characters) is what makes his story so unsettling.
1 The Lady In Waiting: Little Nightmares
The Lady is one of the most mysterious creatures in the series, with little known about her or how she came to be in charge of the Maw. Unlike the other creatures you encounter on your journey, the Lady is methodical in her approach, choosing to stalk you from the shadows rather than attack you with her power straight away.
The Lady is humanoid, with her defining feature being the white mask she wears to disguise her true appearance. What makes the Lady so creepy is her silent method of stalking you. By hiding among mannequins wearing similar clothing, she blends right into the background, watching you as you attempt to stop her. Mannequins are already terrifying, but the knowledge that one could be the Lady waiting to stop you in your tracks takes the whole thing to another level.
