Marvel’s Avengers Outsold Tony Hawk And NBA This Weekend In The UK

Marvel’s Avengers, developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix, claimed the top spot on the UK physical retail charts this week. The new superhero title was followed by Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 and NBA 2K21.

Despite high expectations, Avengers sales did not compare to the last big release from Marvel, Spider-Man on PS4, which launched in September 2018. Physical sales of Avengers were less than a third of what Spider-Man sold in the UK during its debut week.

Avengers, a third-person action role-playing brawler, can be played in both single-player and multiplayer modes. Meanwhile, Spider-Man and Tomb Raider, the previous Crystal Dynamics release, are single-player games, which may explain the difference in boxed sales. Also, Avengers has arrived at the end of a console generation, therefore, its ultimate success is expected to develop over time.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, on the other hand, has received rave reviews, compared to the last game in the series, 2015’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. The new game’s first week boxed sales are an astounding 448% higher than its predecessor.

NBA 2K21, which ranked third in terms of boxed sales, has been a bit of a disappointment. First week sales are down 37% compared with NBA 2K20, despite the fact that overall, boxed game sales in the UK are up 37% this week compared with the week before.

Avengers, Pro Skater 5 and NBA 2K21 are the only new entries on the UK charts this week. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in March, is still going strong in the fourth spot, followed by Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Minecraft (Switch), Grand Theft Auto 5, FIFA 20, Ghost of Tshusima, and PGA Tour 2K21, which rounds out the top ten.

Interestingly, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year Edition, which has been marked down, has returned to the charts at No. 11, with sales up 237%. On 4 September 2020, CD Projekt Red, the game’s developer, announced that an upgraded version is being developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and modern PC hardware.
