Microsoft mocks Sony over PS5 Spider-Man upgrade confusion

Fan frustration over Sony’s approach to next gen upgrades, especially for Spider-Man: Miles Morales, has led to an epic level dig from Xbox.

Sony’s fumbled explanation for how next gen upgrades will, or won’t, work for Spider-Man: Miles Morales has given Microsoft the chance to make mileage out of their discomfort, pointing out how much easier everything is on Xbox Series X and S.

Microsoft’s Smart Delivery programme means that any first party game you buy on Xbox One will automatically be upgraded to the Xbox Series version if you get a new console, with the same true for many, but not all, third party titles.

Sony has no such system though and instead offers upgrade deals on a case-by-case basis, which has led to lots of confusion over Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the ultimate edition of which contains a remaster of the original PlayStation 4 Spider-Man game.

It took Sony a long time to explain what was going on, but it turns out that while you can upgrade from the PlayStation 4 version of Miles Morales to the PlayStation 5 version you have to pay extra to get the remaster of the first game, even if you already own it on PlayStation 4 (and the saves aren’t compatible).

For many it’s not so much the thought of having to pay $20 (£16) extra but the fact that it’s taken so long to drag the truth out of Sony as to what’s going on.

The dig from Xbox UK was considerably more succinct though, just a picture of Leonardo DiCaprio from Django Unchained and a reminder that there are no qualifications when upgrading Xbox Series games.

It’s all very reminiscent of when Sony mocked Microsoft for the horribly complicated digital-only rules for borrowing or selling games on Xbox One. Rules that Microsoft eventually abandoned but which sealed the fate of the console before it was even out.

The backlash for Sony and PlayStation 5 is unlikely to be that severe but they’re certainly getting a taste of their own medicine at the moment.
