It's taken quite a while, but Netflix's One Piece live-action series has finally started production. The confirmation came courtesy of Netflix's Twitter account which showed stars Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), Iñaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), and Taz Skylar (Sanji) walking around town. A second tweet revealed chairs for Nami as well as showrunners Steven Maeda and Matt Owens.
The only person not pictured is Mackenyu, who will play Roronoa Zoro in the show. He might not yet be wherever the rest of the Straw Hat Crew are at the moment as his Instagram has him showcasing jewelry about a week ago.
We're not exactly sure where One Piece is filming either, but it might be someplace in Africa. Steven Maeda's recent tweets reveal a safari vacation last month and also that production truly began on January 30.
It's been a long and winding road for the Netflix One Piece adaptation. The show first was greenlit back in 2017 thanks to a deal with series creator Eiichiro Oda. Two years after that, Matt Owens signed on as writer, and then almost a year later, Maeda agreed to produce. The script was finally completed in September 2021, and now that production has started, we might actually see a One Piece TV show.
The only question is, will it be any good? Netflix has a spotty record when it comes to anime adaptations. The Cowboy Bebop live-action show received tepid reviews and probably not a lot of viewers, leading to its cancellation not a month after its debut. The live-action Death Note film was also poorly received by fans, although apparently not enough to prevent a sequel.
But hey, maybe third time’s the charm when it comes to live-action anime TV adaptations. We’ll find out when One Piece arrives, although there’s still no release window as yet.
