A new trailer for the second Sonic the Hedgehog movie has just dropped – a few days early. An unlisted video that appears to be intended to air during the Super Bowl this Sunday has been shared online, and gives us a much more in-depth look at what we can expect from the sequel.
Capitalising on the most exciting aspect of the first trailer, this one focuses heavily on Knuckles. For those of you that were uh, fond of Idris Elba's take on the echidna in the last teaser, then you're in for a treat here.
While the trailer is short, it's full of detail. We see Sonic and Knuckles fight in what appears to be Angel Island, but with a bit of a different look to fit in with the movie's lore. While the iconic pyramid can be seen, it's surrounded by owl statues, because owls are a big thing here, for some reason.
Despite that detail, it seems that this sequel will be much more reminiscent of the games than its predecessor. The fact that the fight takes place right next to the Master Emerald will probably be relevant to the plot, considering it is Knuckles' job to (very unsuccessfully) keep it safe.
In another blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, Eggman deploys a huge, moustachioed robot – based on his own likeness, of course. Fans of the game will immediately recognize this as one of Eggman's longtime motifs, although we rarely see Sonic fight against bots that huge.
While some shots do still take place in the "real" world, far away from the setting of the games, it definitely seems that we'll be spending more time in whatever weird world that movie Sonic comes from. The reception to the new look already seems to be positive amongst fans, so this is likely to be a move that pays off.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to hit cinemas April 8 of this year. It's also expected to be available via Paramount Plus at some point, but it's not yet known if this will be during its theatrical run.
