A vague teaser confirms that a new South Park game is in the works at THQ, possibly the same one that was announced last year.
To cap off its most recent digital showcase, THQ revealed that it has 43 games in development, with 26 of them still to be announced. It then went ahead and announced a new South Park game.
Said announcement consisted only of a logo for South Park Digital Studios, which produces the show and other related media, like video games.
Last year, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said that a new 3D game ‘set in the world of South Park’ was in the works. They probably weren’t meant to say that at the time but it’s likely this is that same project.
There’s also the fact that Question Games is meant to be working on a South Park game too, one that is speculated to be for consoles and have a multiplayer component. That’s also probably the same game as THQ is teasing.
THQ was supposed to be the original publisher for the South Park: The Stick Of Truth role-playing game from 2014 but it went bust before it had a chance and ended up selling the publishing rights to Ubisoft (THQ Nordic later bought the THQ name and some of its IP).
Ubisoft then went on to publish sequel The Fractured But Whole in 2017, but that remains the last big budget South Park game on consoles.
As for the rest of the THQ showcase, it kicked things off with the Alone In The Dark remake. While its existence did leak prior to the showcase, the reveal trailer gave us some proper glimpses at its gameplay.
We also got a new trailer for the Gothic remake, which was given the greenlight in 2020 following a successful playable teaser. Much like Alone In The Dark, it will be for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (so no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One release), but the trailer featured no gameplay or a release date.
In terms of games that aren’t remakes, both Outcast 2 and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake received new gameplay trailers. They still lack official release dates, but retailers may have leaked those anyway.
Some gameplay was also shown for wrestling sim AEW Fight Forever, which is in development at Yuke’s (the original studio for the WWE 2K games, until 2018) and THQ confirmed that it will have a playable demo at Gamescom later this month.
Other brand new announcements include Tempest Rising, a real-time strategy game from Duke Nukem studio 3D Realms, and Wreckcreation, an arcade racer that deliberately resembles Burnout – with developer Three Fields Entertainment consisting of former staff from Burnout studio Criterion Studios.
What the other games are remains to be seen but when THQ Nordic says it has 43 games in development it could be counting different format versions of the same title – so the number of unique games is likely less than that.
