New The Witcher video game uses Unreal Engine 5 and starts ‘new saga’

CD Projekt has confirmed they’ve started work on a new The Witcher game but so far they’ve made a point of not calling it The Witcher 4.

A new entry in The Witcher series was always on the cards given its popularity, especially now with the Netflix show. Today, CD Projekt made its existence official, confirming that a new game is in development.

Announced via Twitter and an update to the official website, it’s not called The Witcher 4 and is so far only referred to as The Witcher: A New Saga Begins. Aside from key art of a wolf mask in the snow, the only other thing CD Projekt shared was that it will be made in Unreal Engine 5.

This basically confirms that it will be a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S exclusive game, plus PC, with CD Projekt adding this is part of a multi-year partnership with Epic Games. As for CD Projekt’s own REDengine, it will continue to be used for Cyberpunk 2077.

While there is general excitement for the project, there is obviously some trepidation too, and rightly so. Considering Cyberpunk 2077’s now infamous development cycle and release, hopefully CD Projekt will actively avoid repeating the same mistakes.

No release date or development time frame has been given, which is ideally a sign that CD Projekt will take the time it needs and not try and meet a specific deadline.

Given the subtitle and lack of number, it’s also possible that this new game won’t centre around series protagonist Geralt. There has been demand for his adopted daughter Ciri to take centre stage and CD Projekt has teased the possibility before.

It even said the next Witcher won’t be The Witcher 4, which was taken to mean that it’d be a spin-off. Although at the moment everything is open to interpretation.
