Nintendo announced the news during a recent blog post: “Tune in on Thursday, August 31 at 3pm UK time for an in-depth look at Mario’s latest 2D side-scrolling adventure in the livestreamed Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct, running roughly 15 minutes.”
Super Mario Bros. Wonder has an October 20 release date exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
The game sees Mario return to his 2D platforming roots, only this time he has company – not to mention some weird and wacky power-ups.
Featuring co-op multiplayer for at least four players, playable characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi and Toad.
Judging by the recent trailer, Mario and friends can transform into elephants, which will come in handy when tackling some of the new obstacles.
“Classic Mario side-scrolling gameplay is turned on its head with the addition of Wonder Flowers!” Nintendo explains.
“These game-changing items trigger spectacular moments you have to see to believe. Witness pipes coming alive, wreak havoc as a giant spiky ball, and see even more unexpected events called Wonder Effects.”
Fans can actually pre-order the game ahead of launch. It costs £49.99 on the Nintendo eShop for the digital version.
The physical version also costs £49.99, and can be pre-ordered from the likes of Argos, Amazon and GAME.
Sadly, the August 31 Nintendo Direct conference won’t feature any updates on the heavily rumoured Nintendo Switch 2 device.
The Nintendo Switch successor is rumoured to have a 2024 release date. With Nintendo often holding Direct conferences in September, there’s a good chance we could get our first glimpse of the device next month.
Stay tuned for more information about the Nintendo Switch 2, and check back later for all the Super Mario Bros. Wonder news from today’s Direct conference.
