Octopath Traveler’s Mobile Spin-Off Will Launch In Japan On October 28

Square Enix Japan has announced that Octopath Traveler: Conquerers of the Continent (a mobile spin-off to the popular Switch/PC JRPG) will be releasing on Japanese smartphones on October 28, 2020. Coming to both iOS and Android, pre-registration is currently available through each platform’s respective app stores.

Set in the same land as the main game, Conquerers of the Continent tells an original tale with a different group of heroes. Taking place several years prior to the main game, you could view this as a prequel that follows the tale of three famous heroes who shape the land of Orsterra for generations to come. Combat utilizes a similar system to the main game with turn-based commands and players will be able to build a party of up to eight characters to battle with.

Square Enix hasn’t confirmed if this second Octopath Traveler game will be heading west, but it does seem likely. The game is reusing a lot of the assets from the main title and seems like it could be released as a DLC expansion of sorts. Considering the success of the main game, I’m sure fans would welcome something extra in the interim of a sequel.

If your skills in Japanese are fairly adequate, you can pre-register on your device of choice to give it a go. With the game being free-to-play, the only thing you have to lose is some time. I imagine that even if the plot is basic or the game lacks innovation, it would still be a joy to experience due to Octopath Traveler’s wonderful visual style.
