The developer behind A Short Hike, Adam Robinson-Yu, just released an “unofficial” multiplayer mod for the game which supports up to 99 players. While it was apparently designed as a joke for April Fool's Day, the mod has now been made freely available.
“A friend of mine said ‘you should announce A Short Hike: Battle Royale for April Fool’s, haha’ and I was like ‘hmm, but what if actually?’ No battling, though — just vibing,” Robinson-Yu explained on Twitter.
“This was supposed to be some sort of April Fool’s joke, but I don't wanna confuse anyone, so I'm just gonna drop some facts,” Robinson-Yu pointed out. The developer went on to say that “it's a rough mod” and “this won't be an official game mode.” Robinson-Yu also provided a link to where players can download the relevant game files.
Players can start their own servers in the future, but Robinson-Yu is only planning to support online services for a couple of weeks, meaning that now is the best time to experience the mod.
When it comes to how the mod functions, Robinson-Yu explained that “only the player state is synced.” The effect is that “non-player characters and items and everything else behave as if you're playing singleplayer.”
While interaction is relatively limited, players have still managed to break the game in all sorts of interesting ways. These include jumping on the boat until it capsizes and climbing on top of each other to form a kind of living ladder. “Claire stacking is a popular activity,” the developer noted.
Robinson-Yu has provided detailed installation instructions on the product page for anyone wanting to play the mod or start their own server. “The multiplayer server will be up for a limited time,” the developer said. “However, you can download and run your own server if you'd like.”
