The ninth console generation is well underway, with the PS5 and Xbox Series X being out for over half a year now. Both Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles launched in November around the world, and while the new PlayStation and Xbox have been hit with widespread stock shortages the consoles have still sold millions of units. According to latest estimates from VGChartz, the PS5 is winning the sales battle against the Xbox Series X, but the Nintendo Switch is still outselling both systems considerably.
Worldwide hardware estimates for the week leading up to June 5 say the PS5 has since launch sold just over nine million consoles, whereas the Xbox Series X and S has sold 5.33million.
For the week May 30 to June 5, the PS5 is estimated to have sold 199,629 consoles around the world, with the Xbox Series X and S selling 112,864.
While the PS5 is reportedly outselling the Xbox Series X and S by almost two to one, breaking sales figures down by region show the battle is closer in some regions then other.
According to VGChartz estimates, the PS5 vs Xbox Series X sales battle is closest in the Americas.
For the week leading up to June 5 the P55 sold 75,232 consoles with the Xbox Series X and S selling 65,866.
The market where the gap is the largest is Europe, with the PS5 selling 82,852 during the same period – compared to the Xbox Series X and S’s 33,929.
PS5: Sony unveil pricing for PlayStation 5 console
In both Asia and Oceania the PS5 is ahead of the Xbox Series X and S’s sales.
In Asia, which includes Japan – an area Xbox has historically struggled, the PS5 sold 38,269 consoles in the week leading up to June 5. This is compared to the Xbox Series X and S which sold 9,246 consoles.
While that’s less than a quarter of what the PS5 sold, the figures seem to be more favourable than the Xbox One era.
Between its launch in 2017 and 2020, the Xbox One reportedly sold just over 100,000 consoles in Japan.
Elsewhere, in Oceania the gap between the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S sales is tight.
Between May 30 and June 5 the PS5 is estimated to have sold 6,389 compared to the Xbox Series X and S’s 4,267.
However, in all regions the number one console is the Nintendo Switch.
According to VGChartz, for the week leading up to June 5 the Switch sold 392,790 consoles around the world.
That’s almost double what the PS5 sold during that same period, and more than triple what the Xbox Series X and S did.
However, the caveat to all this is the Switch currently isn’t affected by the same persistent stock shortages that are hitting the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.
These latest figures will all give Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony different reasons to be pleased.
For Sony, PlayStation is continuing its momentum from the previous generation and still continuing to outsell Xbox.
But for Microsoft the close gap to Sony sales in certain regions, along with the closer sales between Xbox and PlayStation this gen compared to last, could give them cause for optimism.
The PS4 outsold the Xbox One by over two to one, while the gap between the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S is smaller.
And finally for Nintendo, the sales momentum the Nintendo Switch has enjoyed for years continues to rumble on.
It looks like the Switch could overtake the Wii’s lifetime sales by the end of this year, which would make it the sixth best selling console of all time – and Nintendo’s best selling home console ever.
If the Switch manages to hit this milestone within less than five years, it may raise hopes the Switch could end up topping the list of the best selling consoles of all time, when all is said and done.
The PS2 is currently the best selling console ever – selling 155million units in its lifetime.
