PUBG has just revealed its newest map. Originally teased last year as a waterlogged cyberpunk landscape and given the codename "Kiki," the map has since evolved to become one of PUBG’s most varied landscapes to date.
"Deston is the largest, tallest, and densest map the game has ever seen," said PUBG creative director Dave Curd in the latest dev talk video. "Throughout a match on Deston, players will experience dense urban settings with tall vertical buildings to rolling hills, plains and newly designed swamps. The map aims to deliver the sweet spot between fun gameplay and immersing players in realistic battlegrounds. Deston will challenge players to learn each biome of the map to understand how it will challenge them to consider different gear, vehicles, and cover in order to claim a Chicken Dinner."
Players could get whiplash from how Deston will go from a rural state fair to a futuristic city full of solar panels and giant glass skyscrapers, but also flooded thanks to climate change and a catastrophic hurricane. The whole place has been deserted, leaving strip malls, shopping centers, and even an outdoor paintball field as the perfect cover for PUBG’s battle royale matches.
There are also plenty of natural environments to be found in Deston, from wide open fields perfect for sniping to mangrove forests and swamps that are best traversed by the new Airboat, a flat-bottomed watercraft that’s great for shallow areas. To get to the top of all those skyscrapers, Deston adds the new Ascender motorized pulley, and for getting down, all players will come equipped with the emergency parachute.
Gas stations still have some gas despite the hurricane’s devastation, but developer Krafton warns players that stray shots could cause a catastrophic explosion. There’s also two new weapons to contend with: the O12 rapid-fire shotgun and the MP9 submachine gun. Deston will have more features as well, but those will be detailed in future announcements.
Deston arrives in PUBG on July 13, while PUBG Mobile will hold a crossover event with The Great British Teddy Bear Company on July 22.
